Also Tuesday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with the king and crown prince in Riyadh and said the Saudis had already started a "serious and credible investigation" and seemed to suggest it could lead to people within the kingdom.

However, Riyadh insists that the journalist, a known critic of Saudi King Salman, had left the building and that the murder claims are "baseless".

However, unconfirmed reports in the USA media suggest Saudi Arabia is preparing to admit that Mr Khashoggi died as a result of an interrogation that went wrong and that the original intention had been to abduct him.

The scans, obtained by NBC News from Turkish officials, show the photo-and-bio pages of seven Saudi passports that Turkish officials say belonged to seven of the 15 Saudis who arrived in Istanbul ahead of Khashoggi's disappearance.

Saudi Arabia is preparing a report that would admit Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed as the result of an interrogation that went wrong, CNN and the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing unnamed sources.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today he hoped a "reasonable opinion" would be reached as soon as possible, clarifying what happened when the Saudi journalist entered his country's consulate in Istanbul two weeks ago.

Turkish officials would not comment on the disposal method for the body, pending investigation and a planned search of the consul's residence.

Turkish officials, on the other hand, have been releasing evidence and brutal recordings of Khashoggi being beaten, drugged, murdered and dismembered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

He added: "It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers".

Trump called Khashoggi's disappearance a "terrible situation".

In an interview with Fox News, a prominent Trump ally in the Senate called on Saudi Arabia to reject the crown prince, known as MBS, who rose to power previous year and has aggressively sought to soften the kingdom's image overseas and attract foreign investment.

"The Saudis claimed that the consul's family was inside", Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters.

The crisis over Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi's apparent murder at the Saudi Consulate in Turkey, which US lawmakers believe was an orchestrated hit by the Saudi government, has opened a growing rift between President Trump and congressional Republicans just three weeks before the midterms.

Overnight, Donald Trump compared the growing global condemnation of Saudi Arabia's alleged part in Mr Khashoggi's disappearance to his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh being accused of sexual assault.

Pompeo told reporters as he departed Riyadh that neither side would talk about the "facts" of the case before Saudi officials were able to complete a "thorough investigation" into the journalist's disappearance.

Reuters said investigators found "strong evidence" but no conclusive proof of Khashoggi's death.

Despite concerns about Saudi human rights, Trump still says he is unwilling to pull out of arms sales accords with Riyadh.

The top U.S. diplomat also said the Saudi leadership "strongly denied any knowledge of what took place in their consulate in Istanbul".

CNN said the Saudis may argue the operation was conducted without clearance and those responsible would be held accountable.

"I think we have to find out what happened first", Trump told the Associated Press in an interview on Tuesday.
