British Isles brace for Storm Callum as powerful gusts hit Ireland

  • Thousands without power after Storm Callum

In Galway city, coastal routes along the harbour are closed as a precaution ahead of high tide at around 7.45am.

The highest speeds were recorded on the Isles of Scilly in the early hours of Friday morning, while 60mph gales were recorded in Camborne in Cornwall and Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire.

Paul Hand of ESB Networks said 30,000 homes and business were without power, but he anticipated this figure increasing as the storm moves north.

Rail services to Drogheda, Dundalk and Belfast have been suspended because of a tree on the line at Donabate in Dublin.

638 homes were without power on Friday as Electricity North West dealt with four power cuts across Cumbria, of which 549 were near Penrith.

Met Eireann announced that weather warnings for the west and northwest coast would remain in place today until 5pm.

Kanye West defends support for Trump, in front of Trump
Fans have long speculated that West would run for president in 2020, but he appeared to throw cold water on that notion for now. West also had a sartorial suggestion for Trump, proposing a hat that says just "Make America Great" - dropping the "again".

Despite there being no weather warning now in place for Wrexham on Saturday, further heavy rainfall is expected to hit the area throughout most the day.

A status-orange weather warning is issued by Met Éireann for wind speeds that have the capacity to produce unsafe and stormy conditions that may constitute a risk to life and property. That in itself is likely to bring disruption to roads and there is likely to be some bridge closures and power outages.

"We are also starting to see the rain push in to parts of south-west England and part of the Republic of Ireland", Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkhill said.

The MET Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the area and says people can expect delays to their journeys.

"Further strong winds may bring down leaves and branches, increasing the likelihood of flooding due to blocked drains or culverts".

A yellow "be aware" warning is in place for the rest of Wales for strong winds. Temperatures will return to mainly normal for the time of year with light to moderate southerly winds, freshening from a south to southeasterly direction later as another spell of rain arrives Monday night.
