A Russian Soyuz rocket, carrying two-man Russian-American crew, malfunctioned and made an emergency landing in Kazhakstan.

Reuters Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin (R) and USA astronaut Nick Hague (L) disembark from a plane, after the Soyuz spacecraft made an emergency landing following a failure of its booster rockets, as they arrive at Baikonur airport, Kazakhstan, Oct. 11, 2018.

Gerst tweeted his relief that the two astronauts were safe, saying the day's events "showed again what an wonderful vehicle the Soyuz is, to be able to save the crew from such a failure".

NASA says two astronauts from the US and Russian Federation have been flown to the city of Dzhezkazgan in Kazakhstan en route to Moscow after an emergency landing following the failure of a booster rocket carrying them to the International Space Station.

Jim Bridenstine, NASA's administrator who was in Kazakhstan to witness Thursday's launch, said in a statement that the failure had been caused by an anomaly with the rocket's booster.

'The capsule is returning via a ballistic descent, which is a sharper angle of landing compared to normal.

Most recently, a mysterious hole was detected on the Russian section of the ISS in August, and a Soyuz launch failure destroyed 18 satellites in November 2017.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he expected Russian President Vladimir Putin would be briefed on the incident.

Hague and Ovchinin are safely back on Earth after the abort, during which they likely experienced the force of seven times Earth's gravity. This subjects the crew to higher levels of g-force. The first crewed flights would not take place until several months after that, unless the space agency is willing to take additional risks with those missions.

Russian news agencies reported that the crew had safely made an emergency landing and were in radio contact and that rescuers were en route to pick them up.

Smoke rises as first-stage boosters separate from a Soyuz rocket with a Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft carrying a NASA astronaut an a Russian cosmonaut.

According to Spaceflight Now, this is the first inflight failure of a Soyuz rocket with people onboard since 1975.

Russian space agency Roscosmos has released photographs of both astronauts being checked over after their abrupt landing.

A Russian rocket carrying an American and a Russian to the International Space Station failed on launch Thursday, forcing the astronaut and cosmonaut to careen back to Earth in a dramatic emergency landing.

The International Space Station - a rare point of cooperation between Moscow and Washington - has been orbiting the Earth since 1998.

"The crew has landed".

NASA had issued a worrying tweet on Thursday morning saying: 'There's been an issue with the booster from today's launch.

This failure comes as America is working to wean itself off of its Russian rocket dependency.

ABC News reported that Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov announced that all manned launches will be suspended until the investigation is complete and the cause of the rocket's failure can be pin-pointed.

Rocket science is always a risky business, which is why crewed capsules and the rockets that launch them carry a variety of systems built in to ensure the safety of those aboard, as the world remembered today.
