  • Traffic tries to navigate floods on the Castlebar to Belmullet road in Co Mayo yesterday

The yellow warning runs from 05:00 BST on Friday until midnight on Saturday and the amber warning from 06:00 on Friday until 18:00 on Saturday.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain between 6am on Friday and 6pm on Saturday, particularly over south-facing hills.

Storm Callum will hit Cork, Kerry (both of whom were in the first warning), Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Clare (all of whom were in the second warning) and "Southeast winds veering southwest will gust generally between 100 and 130km/h, higher in some coastal areas and on high ground".

Local Social Media weather expert Louth Weather has warned that Storm Callum has the potential to cause damage upon its arrival later tonight and early tomorrow morning.

Meanwhile, Met Eireann has issued an orange warning for gale-force winds of up to 80mph for all the coastal counties in the Republic of Ireland on Thursday and Friday.

THE Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for much of the United Kingdom this weekend as Storm Callum threatens to strike.

While Northern Ireland will enjoy some respite from the stormy conditions on Friday afternoon, winds are expected to pick up in the far northwest of Scotland into the evening.

"Areas of high ground exposed to the south and south west will be most affected, with the potential for 50-80mm in 12 hours, and a chance of over 120mm in a few spots".

Gary White, NRW's Duty Tactical Manager, said: "The current forecasted rain could cause flooding this week, especially in south and west Wales, and we are urging people to prepare themselves".

It comes on top of existing yellow Met Office warnings for high winds and heavy rain across most of the country.

Edinburgh will see a very windy start to the day, but winds will slowly ease as the day progresses. Gusts 50 to 60 miles per hour are likely in some places, with potential for gusts of 70 to 80 miles per hour around exposed coasts and hills.

Winds will be strongest along the coast and there will also be a danger of some coastal flooding due to a spell of heavy rain and high tides.
