  • Huawei plans to ditch Intel in favour of its own server chips

The company also unveiled a new portfolio of AI-powered "Ascend" series of chips. HiAI will provide a full-stack portfolio for smart devices.

According to a press release by Huawei, the company predicts that by 2025, the world would witness over 40 billion personal smart devices. Eric Xu said that ICT firm was building new products and cloud services on Ascend chip capabilities.

The Shenzhen-based company already offers cloud services but it aims to delve deeper into its enterprise business by selling the hardware along with software and services.

Huawei had unveiled its Kirin 970 chipset with built-in AI in September 2017, at the time calling it the "future of smartphones".

The Huawei logo is seen during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, February 26, 2018.

Ascend 910 - aimed at data centres - is expected to have the world's greatest computing density in a single chip, whilst Ascend 310 is expected to be the most efficient AI system-on-chip (SoC) for low-power computing.

The new data processing chips - the Ascend 910 and Ascend 310 - will start delivery by the second quarter of 2019, the company said (link in Chinese).

That's probably why his latest social media post has caused a lot of chatter. You are pretty busy with that, I hope it wont get stuck in your throat.

AI will also need to synergise better with other technologies, such as cloud, the internet of things (IoT), edge computing, blockchain and big data. That needs to change, said Xu.

"Huawei's AI strategy is built on top of continued investment in basic technologies and talent training", Chairman Eric Xu told the Huawei Connect conference in Shanghai.

But given there's cybersecurity paranoia in the West over the adoption of Chinese technology, especially given the allegations of China sneaking spy chips into the motherboards of a large U.S. tech supplier, Huawei could be looking at quite an uphill struggle.

Huawei's strategy itself has five areas of focus: Invest in AI research; build a full-stack AI portfolio - which the company has now rolled out; develop an open ecosystem and the talent to match; strengthen the existing portfolio; and drive greater operational efficiency within the company. "But if one day we can realize the autonomous network, such jobs of O&M [operations and maintenance] engineers will become redundant". In the consumer market, HiAI will bring true intelligence to our consumer devices, making them smarter than ever.

Our portfolio will also include an AI acceleration card, AI server, AI appliance, and many other products.

"I think this is a very natural phenomenon in the business", he added.
