Giants to release Flowers if they can't trade him

  • Ereck Flowers never lived up to his first-round billing prompting the Giants to reportedly give up on the offensive tackle. More

His play was so poor NY signed former New England Patriots left tackle Nate Solder to a four-year, $62 million contract as a free agent this spring.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Flowers will be released if he isn't traded by 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

New general manager Dave Gettleman also decided after last season not to pick up the option on the final year of Flowers' rookie contract.

But he wasn't - unfortunately his play reinforced he was part of the problem, and that was evident from the first offensive play of the season when he was reduced to trying to trip Jaguars star defensive end Calais Campbell after being beaten badly to the inside.

We're sure Flowers is hopeful as well. All the flaws critics have pointed out through the years are not going away.

The Ereck Flowers era - or error - is coming to an end. Giants coach Pat Shurmur said on Monday that sometimes a change of senary is best for both parties and that the team wished him nothing but the best moving forward.

The Giants like Wheeler a lot, though.

Flowers was not at the Giants' practice Monday.

The Giants' new regime did the right thing by Flowers for months.

The Giants had tried to move Flowers to right tackle when they signed left tackle Nate Solder this offseason.

Over the course of his four-year career, he's appeared in 51 games, starting 48.

After the shift, he earned second-team All-ACC honors in 2014 and was subsequently chosen by the Giants with the ninth overall pick in the ensuing draft. They made a decision to hold onto a player who has started 48 games in his career, hoping that things would turn around once the lights came on. After all, Flowers is a former first-round pick. Any team trading for him would owe about $1.7 million over the rest of the season.
