  • U.S. military suspends operations for F-35 fighter jets, citing safety concerns

Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, chairman of a House Armed Services Committee subpanel, said Thursday that he received a briefing from the Marine Corps on the crash in Beaufort, S.C.

The Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps all have their versions of the F-35, each of which costs about $100 million.

"If suspect fuel tubes are installed, the part will be removed and replaced", according to the Joint Program Office statement.

Mr DellaVedova added that if "known good" tubes are already in place, then those planes will be returned to operational status.

The F-35 joint strike fighter is the most expensive program in the Pentagon's history.

The U.S. military has grounded its fleet of F-35s following a recent crash in SC to inspect the fighter jets' engine fuel tubes, the Pentagon announced Thursday.

Inspections were expected to be completed within 24 to 48 hours.

A US official says only half the current fleet of aircraft have the fuel tube, but inspections will be carried out on the entire USA fleet.

Sears appears to be preparing for a long expected bankruptcy filing
Sears and Kmart merged to form Sears Holdings in 2005 when they had 3,500 USA stores between them. Sears stores at Golden Triangle Mall in Denton and Ridgmar Mall in Fort Worth closed this year.

The jet was based at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and on a routine training missing at the time.

The announcement of the grounding comes after a United States Marine Corps F-35B from the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501, known as the "Warlords", crashed in SC near Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort on September 28.

Of the 280 operational F-35s purchased to date by US and worldwide partners, only 51 percent are now available for flight, Vice Adm. The Marine pilot safely ejected from the plane. Mat Winter, director of the F-35 Joint Program Office, told reporters back in March. "We will take every measure to ensure safe operations while we deliver, sustain and modernize the F-35 for the warfighter and our defense partners".

The inspections will look at possible defects in fuel tubes in the engines and are expected to be completed within the next several days.

"The primary goal following any mishap is the prevention of future incidents", DellaVedova said. The Israeli warplanes, purchased from the USA, are a different model than the American one that crashed.

It cost an estimated $400bn and had a goal to produce 2,500 aircraft in the coming years.

The three USA armed services and global militaries flying the single-engine F-35 all made the decision Thursday to temporarily halt flights while investigators conduct a fleetwide inspection for a faulty part-a fuel tube within the engine-according to Joe Dellavedova, a spokesman for the F-35 Joint Program Office. Gen. Amikam Norkin, wants to conduct additional tests on Israel's F-35s.
