"Mental health services are still being underfunded by the Conservative government, with one in 10 CCGs (Clinical Commissioning Groups) failing to meet the mental health investment standard in the previous year - that is leading to adults having to wait as many as four months for treatment in certain areas, while one in four children are being rejected for treatment after referral".

Mental health is a serious problem spanning all ages all over the world, as staggering figures have proven. One of these is the pressing question of mental health and how our population is coping with it. Statistics from Pakistan Association of Mental Health suggest that one in every four Pakistanis may be suffering a mental disorder.

Akanksha Pandey, a psychologist at Fortis Hospital, said, "With greater awareness, availability, and acceptance, a lot of young women in their 20s and 30s are seeking help against the stigma of the society".

"Many of the problems facing our young people today such as bullying, suicide, the onset of mental illness, the effects of trauma and discrimination require our time and attention, awareness and compassion as well as new programmes and guidelines on how we can protect and empower the next generation".

Labour shadow cabinet member for public health at Peterborough City Council, Cllr Samantha Hemraj, said: "As shadow cabinet member with responsibility for health issues in Peterborough, I believe the first step is to take away the stigma associated with mental illness. Managers can play a critical role in helping to foster a culture where employees feel able to talk openly about their mental health and ask for support when they need it".

When I began my nursing career in the 1980s, I, like many of my classmates, looked forward to working in a medical surgical area so I could flawless my nursing skills. Out of managers who responded, 39 percent said someone has approached them to talk about their mental health, and ten percent said this was as recently as the last month. In addition to shining a light on mental illness, the week also offers an opportunity for behavioral health nurses to reflect on the impact they have in the lives of the people they serve.

Improved understanding of the perspectives and priorities of people with experience of mental illness is vital if change is to be fully realised. "Most women are not victims of mental illness as they have an inherent capacity to handle stress more than men".

The focus of this year's WMHD is on young people. To do this, we need to re-balance the curriculum by giving health and wellbeing the same importance as literacy and numeracy, and creating mentally healthy schools where pupils and teachers can thrive.

While work is not always the reason someone is experiencing mental health problems in the workplace, 61 percent of United Kingdom employees have experienced poor mental health because of work.
