An 8-year-old boy drowned in a flooded canal in Ganjam district in Orissa state, where five people were also reported missing after being swept away by flood waters, the Press Trust of India reported.

Fire services and local administration personnel were working to remove uprooted trees blocking roads.

Heavy rainfall continues to lash the districts, as the weather department warned that Cyclone Titli was very likely to maintain the intensity of a cyclone till Thursday evening with wind speed up to 90 kmph.

Reports of trees, electric poles getting uprooted and damages to kuchha houses were reported, officials said, adding that road communication in some places, including Gopalpur and Berhampur, was snapped.

Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik is slated to take a review of the overall damage caused by Cyclone Titli.

Cyclone Titli hit the Odisha coast at Gopalpur with a wind speed of 126 Kmph around 6:15 am today.

The cyclone wreaked havoc in Ganjam and Gajapati districts of Odisha, but the evacuation of about 3 lakh people ensured there were no fatalities. On the other hand, keeping the situation in view the state government declared closure of schools, colleges, Anganwadi Centres and other educational institutions across state for two days on October 11 and 12.

During its north westward movement it will weaken gradually and re-curve north eastward towards Gangetic West Bengal.

East Coast Railway has already announced cancellation of some trains, diversion and short-termination of trains between Vizianagaram and Khurda Road (in Odisha).

Those evacuated were being kept in special shelters and pregnant women were moved to state-run health centres and hospitals, the commissioner said. The department had advised complete suspension of fishing operations and asked people to stay indoors. IMD's latest forecast report suggested Titli which has turned into a severe cyclonic storm over west-central Bay of Bengal and is further intensifying into a 'very severe cyclonic storm. The IMD has said the region will experience very heavy rain, which could lead to flooding, and strong winds.
