Banky's self-destructing painting might be worth twice as much now

He also included a quote by Pablo Picasso on his Instagram page: "The urge to destroy is also a creative urge".

On Instagram, Banksy revealed he had secretly built a hidden shredder into the frame of the painting years ago, in case it was ever auctioned off.

Of course, the auction house is already trying to spin this in their favour: "We are busy figuring out what this means in an auction context", Branczik told The Art Newspaper.

Sotheby's said this was "certainly" the first time a work of art started to shred itself after coming under the hammer.

The painting sold for £860,000 but with the buyer's premium on the painting, the price shot up to £1.04million.

Despite going through the shredder, art experts believe that Banksy may have actually increased the value of the iconic work.

Dow plunges more than 800 points as tech stocks take beating
The CAC 40 in France dropped 2.1 percent, Germany's DAX lost 2.2 percent and the FTSE 100 in London fell 1.3 percent. In technology, Microsoft dropped 3.1 per cent to US$108.76 Wednesday and Nvidia lost 4.7 per cent to US$253.13.

Banksy, meanwhile, took to social media to poke yet more fun, uploading a picture of the shocked crowd inside the auction house, writing: "Going, going, gone". In 2014 Banksy was awarded Person of the Year at the 2014 Webby awards.

"Girl With Balloon", which depicts a small child reaching up toward a heart-shaped red balloon, was originally stenciled on a wall in east London and has been endlessly reproduced, becoming one of Banksy's best-known images.

Speculation is growing that Banksy, the world-famous guerrilla artist whose identity remains unknown, was sitting in the Sotheby's auction in London on Saturday.

Unlike the various print editions of the image, this was a unique, original painting signed by Banksy, and gifted to the owner following his 2006 Barley Legal show in Los Angeles. He called Banksy's prank "a turning point in the history of contemporary and conceptual art". The German artist Gustav Metzger coined the genre "auto-destructive art" in the 1960s, and used the inherent ephemerality of his work as a commentary on the post-World War II collapse of the geopolitical order.

Never had we seen such a scene during an auction.

His art is known to be similar to Banksy's and many have claimed he could be the man behind the can.
