Japan overtakes Singapore as world's most powerful passport

Taiwan moved up from No. 31 from a year ago to No. 29, as the countries it has visa-free and visa-on-arrival access to has increased from 134 to 148.

The index, by Henley & Partners, a citizenship and planning firm, showed Japan to have the most powerful passport on the planet.

"With stagnant outbound visa activity compared to Asian high-performers such as Japan, Singapore and South Korea, it seems increasingly unlikely that the United States and the UK will regain the number one spot they jointly held in 2015", said the press release.

Tied for fourth place are Denmark, Finland, Italy, Sweden and Spain.

Two countries are still at the bottom spot.

The index also identified the countries with the greatest improvement in visa-free travel for citizens, including China and the UAE - which secured the most visa-waiver agreements out of all the countries this year, CNN reported.

Somalia and Syria are only slightly improved with access to 32 countries. Over the same period Georgia has added 18, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates 17, and China 14. It's risen from 62nd place in 2006 to now being No. 21 in the rankings. UAE citizens have access to 161 destinations.

"The ranking is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which maintains the world's largest and most comprehensive database of travel information, and is enhanced by extensive in-house research", it said.

"Along with the Henley & Partners - Kochenov Quality of Nationality Index, the Henley Passport Index is considered the most credible reference tool within the investment migration industry", it said.
