Turkish officials told the The Washington Post and Reuters on Saturday that Khashoggi was killed inside the consulate.
There, newspapers have called Khashoggi's disappearance a plot ginned up by Qatar, who the kingdom has been boycotting with three other nations since past year. "We have some concrete information, it won't be an unresolved crime", the Middle East Eye reported.
Jamal Khashoggi is one of the Arab world's most prominent journalists and commentators.
Reuters journalists toured the six-storey consulate in northern Istanbul which Khashoggi entered on Tuesday to get documents for his forthcoming marriage. Airport entrances and exits are being investigated.
The New York Times account says its sources report the Saudis "had arrived to silence Mr. Khashoggi, but that it was not clear if the plan had been to bring him back to Saudi Arabia alive, and something went wrong, or if the intention was to kill him there".
"I assure you that the reports that suggest that Jamal Khashoggi went missing in the Consulate in Istanbul or that the Kingdom's authorities have detained him or killed him are absolutely false, and baseless", Prince Khaled said in the statement released on Monday evening.
As Khashoggi wrote in his first column in the Post: 'That is how breathtakingly fast you can fall out of favor with Saudi Arabia'.
"If Mr Khashoggi was murdered inside the consulate, it will cast the Saudi regime and its de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in a new and disturbing light and require a thorough reevaluation of US-Saudi relations", the newspaper said in an op-ed. The Post said "a person close to the investigation" shared the image with them.

The Foreign Ministry said Saudi authorities have notified Ankara they are "open to co-operation" and will allow the consulate building to be searched.
The foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has warned Saudi Arabia that its friendship with the United Kingdom depends on shared values, after he demanded answers over claims that a Saudi hit squad may have played a role in the disappearance and possible killing of Jamal Khashoggi. She accused Saudi Arabia of "state terrorism" and called on the global community to take action against the kingdom.
"What we do care about is Jamal's well-being and revealing the truth about what occurred", the ambassador said.
Officials say the convoy left the consulate around two hours after Khashoggi entered.
"And that happened", the crown prince told Bloomberg on Friday in a wide-ranging interview.
Khashoggi, 59, had a long career as a senior journalist in Saudi Arabia and also as an adviser to top officials.
