Microsoft Explains Why Windows 10’s October 2018 Update Was Deleting People’s Files

"We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating", Microsoft writes. The text now also states that users who miss files after they installed the Windows 10 October 2018 Update should "minimize the use of the affected device". Some people who chose to install it through Windows Update soon reported that their personal documents folders had been wiped clean. Microsoft says that the majority of modern Wi-Fi printers are compatible with the Mopria standard. If, for example, you moved the Documents folder from its location in the user profile to a new location, such as a secondary data drive, but some files remained in the old location, the setup logic for the version 1809 upgrade removed the folder in the old location as well as all of the files in it.
As Microsoft's John Cable explains in a post on Microsoft's Windows Blog, the problem was with the "Known Folder Redirection" feature.
Microsoft responded on October 4th by pulling the update for further investigation into the bug. Now it has re-released the update, fixing the issue while shedding some light on how many people were impacted by the bug.
Microsoft is working to re-release the October 2018 Update publicly, but it is first testing a new build that it says fixes the file deletion issue.
Dona Sarkar, engineering leader of the Windows Insider Program has tweeted that Microsoft is able to restore the removed files. This caused a new issue, though - users with KFR previously enabled found that files still in their default location were deleted, the idea being that only the new "active" redirected folders would remain.
