Trump says Kavanaugh will do 'great, great' job on Supreme Court

  • Brett Kavanaugh has been through a bruising confirmation process which has included allegations of sexual misconduct from his student days which he categorically denies

The Senate confirmed Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court Saturday afternoon, likely cementing a conservative majority on the court for a generation and bringing to an end months of bitter partisan feuding marked by shocking allegations of sexual assault and vehement and angry denials from the nominee.

His promotion to the Supreme Court also stands as a demoralising defeat for Democrats who had battled hard to block the 53-year-old judge at all costs.

The upper house is split 51-49 in favour of the Republicans and the vote was largely along party lines.

In a statement, the court says Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the Constitutional Oath and retired Associate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy will administer the Judicial Oath in a private ceremony at the Supreme Court. Both Republicans voted to back the soon-to-be Justice's nomination.

Republicans control the Senate by a meager 51-49 margin, and announcements of support Friday from Republicans Jeff Flake of Arizona and Susan Collins of ME, along with Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia, locked in the needed votes.

Manchester City’s tactics a compliment to Liverpool, says Virgil van Dijk
They also dropped deeper as a back four to deny Liverpool's front three the space to get in behind them and it worked a treat. I liked it, but if you want to win against City, you have to use a few of these half-chances.

Hundreds were arrested on Capitol Hill this week - including several dozen in the hours leading to the final vote. Yet, while progressives may have hated the idea of Kavanaugh on the court, Trump and his advisers knew that to key parts of his constituency, evangelical Christians and conservatives, he would literally be seen a gift from heaven. That "nay" vote and the fact that the committee voted to move ahead with Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing caused a number of Democratic senators, Cory Booker and Kamala Harris, to walk out in protest. Trump spoke to reporters on the White House lawn. These things are of such high priority to them, that they're willing to ram through a person who has been credibly accused of multiple instances of sexual assault, simply because he'll vote their way on the bench. The chamber voted 50-48 to confirm Kavanaugh, mostly along party lines, after a weeklong Federal Bureau of Investigation probe helped settle concerns among most wavering senators about the sexual assault allegations that almost derailed his nomination and led to a dramatic second hearing.

Trump, flying to Kansas for a political rally, flashed a thumbs-up gesture when the tally was announced and praised Kavanaugh for being "able to withstand this awful, disgusting attack by the Democrats".

The crowds outside the court have been chanting "Vote them out!" Manchin is running for re-election in his traditionally Republican state.

Manchin expressed empathy for sexual assault victims.

The letter specifically referenced a period during Kavanaugh's opening statements September 27 when he called the hearings "a calculated and orchestrated political hit".

"As I said on the floor of the Senate, the confirmation process has become poisonous, and senators on both sides of the aisle need to work together to fix some of the damage to the institution and the country". Meanwhile, Trump - himself no stranger to sexual misconduct allegations - praised the Senate for confirming his "GREAT NOMINEE" via Twitter.
