Vitamin D supplements do not improve bone health, major study finds

  • New Study Finds Vitamin Supplements Are A Waste Of Time

"Our meta-analysis finds that vitamin D does not prevent fractures, falls or improve bone mineral density, whether at a high or low dose", he continued.

Despite recommendations from governmental bodies around the world, vitamin D supplements do not benefit bone health.

Lead author Dr. Mark Bolland, of the University of Auckland, New Zealand, said: "Since the last major review of the evidence in 2014, more than 30 randomized controlled trials on vitamin D and bone health have been published, almost doubling the evidence base available".

Vitamin D supplements aren't what they are cracked up to be when it comes to improving bone health and preventing breaks.

He said advice given by medical experts and the government on vitamin D supplements should be adjusted to reflect the recent findings.

People with little or no sun exposure are more likely to develop vitamin D deficiency.

THERE is little justification in using vitamin D supplements to maintain or improve musculoskeletal health, scientists have suggested.

Professor Louis Levy, PHE's head of nutrition science, said: "This study highlights the importance of maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D to reduce the risk of poor musculoskeletal health".

Trump wins: Brett Kavanaugh confirmed to Supreme Court
Though the fight to confirm Trump's pick is now official over, the impact of Kavanaugh's confirmation will have a lasting effect. That's what they have become. "Very, very good", Mr Trump said. "Republicans are the party of law and order and justice".

Over the last four years, over 30 new randomized controlled trials have been carried out and have been published.

The new study found no meaningful effect of vitamin D supplementation when it came to reducing any fracture, hip fractures or falls.

Previous research suggests that vitamin D, when taken in tandem with calcium, may help prevent certain cancers and protect against age-related declines in thinking and memory. Most studies included women over the age of 65.

Because of the small number of trials with baseline 25OHD below 25 nmol/L (total of 831 participants), more research might be needed into the effect of vitamin D supplementation at these levels.

Between late March/early April to the end of September, most people can get all the vitamin D they need through sunlight and a balanced diet. The authors should be complimented on an important updated analysis on musculoskeletal health, but already I can hear the fervent supporters-what about the extra-skeletal benefits of vitamin D?

For the new report, Avenell and her colleagues reviewed 81 studies, most of which dealt with vitamin D alone, not in combination with the mineral calcium. The conclusion follows one of the largest reviews ever of vitamin D.
