Apple software reportedly bricks third-party MacBook Pro repairs

  • Apple's T2 chip makes third-party Mac repairs impossible

According to Motherboard, who was able to obtain internal Apple documents, the new software will render the computer "inoperative" unless Apple's new software is launched after repairs are completed. This essentially bars third-party repairs, and would also make it hard to fix said machines once they are classified as vintage machines.

If any of these parts are repaired in an iMac Pro or 2018 MacBook Pro, and the Apple diagnostics are not run, this will result in an inoperative system and an incomplete fix, according to Apple's directive to service providers. Proponents of the "right to repair" were alarmed earlier this week when leaked Apple service documents indicated that the latest MacBook Pros and iMac Pro would be left inoperable after repairs from unauthorized service providers.

If an Apple laptop is locked out by the software, it will only function properly again when an authorized Apple service provider runs the diagnostic software. It said that giving users and third-party repairers access to Apple components and service manuals would make Nebraska would become a "Mecca for bad actors". Failing to do so will, "result in an inoperative system and an incomplete fix". But according to a report by MacRumors, Apple's new security chip (called T2) will prevent any component replacements in the new MacBook Pros and iMac Pro from non-authorised fix centers. While getting your device repaired by Apple does give you the extra trust and security of your device, these repairs can often be quite expensive and can be done for cheaper elsewhere.

Apple isn't the only company using proprietary methods to restrict repairs.

Marcus Fraser of Australia and Matt Wallace of England shot 68s in high winds at Carnoustie and St. Andrews, respectively. "Then I was told the news and obviously I am really heartbroken".

The security check applies to repairs including the motherboard of the device, display, Touch ID, and keyboard, battery, trackpad, and speakers for 2018 MacBook Pro. If someone replaces the RAM on the mac with the T2 chip included MacBook or the iMac, then the device will not be able to detect that part, as the information about the specific hardware will not be present on the T2 chip and the device will not turn on.

Apple didn't respond to a request for comment.

Updated on 10/06/18: Updated with iFixIt's report that the software locks aren't in place yet.
