Her voice was noted for its purity, precise control and power using superb technique and vocal shadings, as well as pianissimos, which were inspired by Spanish operatic tenor Miguel Fleta.

Tenor Jose Carreras told Catalunya Radio that the world of opera had lost its "best soprano", saying: "Of all the sopranos that I have heard live, I have never heard anyone like Montserrat".

"Montserrat Caballe, her voice and her tenderness, will always stay with us", he added.

The Spanish opera singer whose song with Freddie Mercury became the featured single of the Barcelona Olympics has passed away.

She also performed alongside the likes of Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo.

US Senate heads to final vote on Kavanaugh nomination
The conservative judge has been embroiled in a fierce row over historic allegations of sexual misconduct, which he denies. Republicans held open an empty seat that year, which Trump filled in 2017 with conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch.

A service for the singer, who has long suffered from health problems, will be held tomorrow with a funeral on Monday, according to Barcelona authorities. "We are very sorry for her loss", the royals said in a tweet.

She leaves behind her husband, fellow opera star Bernabe Marti, to whom she was married for over 50 years, and two children, including classical singer Montserrat Marti.

Her performance that night catapulted her the world stardom throughout the opera scene.

She rose to worldwide fame after a stunning performance as a last-minute replacement for another legend, Marylin Horne, at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1965, and sang in over 80 roles on leading stages around the world.

Her debut went down in opera history as one of the greatest overnight successes ever.

Her last performance took place in the Catalan town of Cambrills in August of 2014.
