Protesters rage as Trump celebrates Kavanaugh victory

  • Kavanaugh confirmation a lock after senators Collins and Manchin back nomination

Despite pressure from the left and members of the #MeToo movement, U.S. Sen.

The near party-line vote was 50-48, capping a fight that seized the national conversation after claims emerged that Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted women three decades ago - which he emphatically denied. Meanwhile, Trump - himself no stranger to sexual misconduct allegations - praised the Senate for confirming his "GREAT NOMINEE" via Twitter.

Numerous demonstrators held signs reading "I am a survivor, not a troublemaker", recalling the #troublemaker hashtag used by President Donald Trump on Friday in reference to protesters who opposed Kavanaugh's nomination.

Flake, whose term ends in 2018, decided not to run for re-election.

Trump ordered the probe, but later complained that Senate Democrats were just trying to waste time.

It's all expected to conclude Saturday afternoon with a final roll call nearly solidly along party lines.

Liberals fear that by solidifying the conservative majority, the articulate judge could overturn or restrict a 1973 verdict banning state and federal regulations criminalising or restricting abortion, which the right-wing supporters of Trump want.

Democrats railed against the nomination in Senate floor speeches Friday night and Saturday morning, and protests opposing Kavanaugh are expected throughout the day on Saturday.

It reflects a high water mark of the Trump presidency: Republican control of the White House, the Senate, the House of Representatives and the judiciary's top court.

In a procedural vote that handed Republicans an initial victory, senators voted 51-49 Friday to limit debate and keep the nomination alive, defeating Democratic efforts to scuttle it with endless delays.

"I'd love that", Trump said.

That trend suggests that a brighter economic outlook hasn't caused consumers to recklessly build up unsustainable debt. Retailers have begun scrambling to hire enough workers for what's expected to be a robust holiday shopping season.

When Manchin's name was called and he announced his vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation, yells of "shame!" could be heard from the gallery and Pence momentarily suspended the vote a second time to ask for order to be restored. "I do hope that Judge Kavanaugh will not allow the partisan nature this process took to follow him on the court".

Democrats said Kavanaugh would push the court too far, including possible sympathetic rulings for Trump should the president encounter legal problems from the special counsel's investigations into Russian connections with his 2016 presidential campaign.

Even as Kavanaugh took his oath of office Saturday evening in a quiet private ceremony, not long after the narrowest Senate confirmation in almost a century and a half, protesters chanted outside the court building across the street from the Capitol.

Kavanaugh was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts shortly after the vote.

"I think it's unfair to people who have actually been abused, raped and molested, for her to come forward and say that she was, when maybe she wasn't, and all those people that have, it's just a mockery", she said.

Two other women accused him in the media of sexual misconduct in the 1980s. Both he and Collins attempted to express a belief that Dr. Blasey Ford was assaulted, but not by Kavanaugh.

McConnell, who stalled Barack Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland to the court in his final year in office and for whom the new conservative majority represents a defining achievement, predicted that Democratic tactics during confirmation battle would electrify Republican voters in November.

Kavanaugh, a conservative jurist, fills the seat of Kennedy, a swing vote on the court.

Kavanaugh foes cast him as a product of a hard-drinking, male-dominated, private school culture in Washington's upscale Maryland suburb of Bethesda.

In a symbol of the deep division over Kavanaugh's nomination, Collins' closest colleague and the only other remaining Republican centrist in the Senate, Lisa Murkowski, bucked her party and voted against the nominee on Friday.
