Trump Mocks Kavanaugh Accuser Christine Blasey Ford at Mississippi Rally

  • President Trump announced a revamped North American free trade deal and then took questions from reporters at the White House Monday

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell accused Democrats on Tuesday of opening "the flood gates of mud and muck" against Brett Kavanaugh as Republicans sought to portray efforts to derail the Supreme Court nominee over accusations of sexual assault in the 1980s as "the politics of personal destruction".

"We needed to make sure senators remain open-minded about the FBI investigation", said Faiz Shakir, national political director at the American Civil Liberties Union, which is spending just over $1 million in Colorado, Nebraska, Alaska and West Virginia.

Republicans hold a 51-49 majority in the Senate, with Vice President Mike Pence a potential tie-breaking vote, meaning they can only lose one vote on Kavanaugh's nomination. Dianne Feinstein of California said Tuesday was too soon to "put all the facts together".

Trump concluded the riff by lamenting the personal cost to Kavanaugh of Ford's allegations and by insinuating that Ford was part of a partisan conspiracy.

Leaning: Collins' signal that she was comfortable Kavanaugh wouldn't overturn Roe vs. Wade appeared to be a sign that she was going to vote for him.

Ernst is among six Republican women in the Senate.

The president told reporters on Monday: "The FBI should interview anybody that they want within reason, but you have to say within reason".

His response? It's "a very scary time for young men in America", because "you can be (found) guilty of something you may not be guilty of".

McConnell said Democrats are intent simply on stopping Kavanaugh's nomination, no matter what it takes.

The senator said he is requesting the recordings because the committee has obtained a letter that "raises specific concerns" about the reliability of Ford's polygraph test. She said Judge was also in the room. She also said on Thursday before the Senate Judiciary Committee that she was unsure if she actually ever showed these therapist's notes to The Washington Post or if she merely summarized what the notes allegedly said.

When Ford's allegations became public, Collins was one of the first senators to say that she wanted to hear directly from Ford. Susan Collins of ME said. Joni Ernst in her Senate offices ahead of the Senate confirmation hearings on Capitol Hill in Washington on July 31.

Kavanaugh first testified for his confirmation hearing before lawmakers on the committee almost a month ago - September 4.

Graham discussed the strategy in more detail on Fox News, saying that Trump could use the issue in the midterm elections to go after Democratic Sens. Talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh, who has made a name for himself as flagbearer for white male identity in America, unloaded on what he calls "militant feminism" after the dramatic Kavanaugh hearing.

Schumer said Kavanaugh seemed willing to "mislead senators about everything from the momentous to the mundane" to ensure his confirmation. Anything we say can or do can be twisted by women we work with.

"We can't have this on the court".

Sitting Supreme Court Justices often teach courses affiliated with universities during the summer months.

Besides Ford, two other women have publicly accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct while he was in high school or college.

A lawyer for the woman who says Kavanaugh exposed himself to her during a college party, Deborah Ramirez, says he's seen no indication that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has reached out to any of the 20 people who Ramirez says may be able to corroborate her account. A third claim from Swetnick accuses Kavanaugh of excessive drinking and inappropriate treatment of women at parties in the early 1980s. Many see her as the most likely Republican to flip and vote against Kavanaugh. It was not immediately clear if Kavanaugh dropped out due to anticipation that he would be serving on the Supreme Court.

The announcement was made in an email from administrators to law students on Monday.

Judge Kavanaugh's friend Mark Judge has been interviewed by agents.

A Harvard Law School spokesperson confirmed Kavanaugh's decision to The Associated Press on Tuesday. He has taught at the law school for about a decade.
