  • Waco Wavepool Closed While CDC Tests for “Brain Eating Amoeba”

Fabrizio Stabile, a 29-year-old from New Jersey, died on September 21 after falling ill with Naegleria fowleri, a rare but deadly amoeba that can cause a brain infection.

The CDC said Monday it is assisting the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District and the surf resort, which voluntarily closed following Stabile's death, in testing for Naegleria fowleri.

Multiple reports confirm that he had returned home from a visit to the BSR Cable Park Surf Resort several days prior.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said contaminated water can enter through the nose and pass through the body.

The disease, according to the CDC, is nearly always fatal, with only four people out of 143 cases have survived the infection.

Finally, on September 20, "Fabrizio's cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tested positive for the amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, which caused a rare infection that has only been diagnosed 143 times in the United States in the last 55 years". The pain was so severe that he couldn't speak coherently. An obituary in The Press of Atlantic City describes Stabile as an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, surfing and snowboarding.

Allison and Honjo have previously shared the 2014 Tang Prize, touted as Asia's version of the Nobels, for their research. Nobel prize week has kicked off with the winners of the medicine award announced on Monday.

The amoeba is typically found in fresh water, especially warmer water such as lakes, rivers and hot springs.

Samples from the pool have been collected for testing, with preliminary results expected later this week.

The water park's owner has said he will comply with further requests relating to the investigation.

Symptoms start between one and nine days after swimming or other nasal exposure to Naegleria-containing water. Later symptoms include stiff neck, confusion, lack of attention, hallucinations, loss of balance and seizures.

He also said he and his workers' "hearts and prayers" are with family and friends of Stabile and the New Jersey surf community.

The park remains closed pending the findings of the CDC. He said the surf resort is in compliance with the CDC's "guidelines and recommendations concerning Naegleria fowleri".
