Tense exchange between Klobuchar, Kavanaugh over drinking questions

Binge-drinking - which was at a 40-year high in the early 1980s - is fast becoming a central focus of the high-profile, he said/she said testimony of Kavanaugh and accuser Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.
The exchange came a few minutes before a break. Pressed at the hearing about his drinking habits in high school, he again claimed he had not broken the law.
Kavanaugh also grew visibly frustrated under questioning by Sen. People have drinking problems in lots of families, Klobuchar said. And the drinking age was 18. I drank beer with my friends. In fact, he still likes beer.
"There is a bright line between drinking beer, which I gladly do, and which I fully embrace, and sexually assaulting someone, which is a violent crime". Yes, we drank beer.
"We drank beer, and you know, so - so did, I think, the vast majority of - of people our age at the time. If every American who drinks beer or every American who drank beer in high school is suddenly presumed guilty of sexual assault, will be an ugly, new place in this country", he continued, in what became seemingly a defense of beer drinking itself.
Kavanaugh refused to say how many beers he drank. That, however, did not apply to Kavanaugh: He didn't turn 18 until the following February. It rose to 21 that September, but Kavanaugh would have been grandfathered, since he had already turned 20.
"Nor do I", Kavanaugh concluded. The drinking age there did not increase to 21 from 18 until 1986.
He parsed the difference between "passing out" and "going to sleep" after drinking.
"I started my last colloquy by saying to Sen". How much Kavanaugh drank at the elite Jesuit school Georgetown Prep is now the subject of fierce debate.
Asked if Kavanaugh had ever suffered memory loss during a time that he had been drinking, Kavanaugh said no, but still defended beer drinking.
Kavanaugh did admit that he sometimes drank too much, but he was evasive in explaining what that meant.
At one point, Kavanaugh asked a Senator if they like drinking beer too. Kavanaugh fired back, "Have you?"
"My friends and I sometimes got together and had parties on weekends", he said in his opening statement.
It is, of course, laughable to imagine Kavanaugh and his high school buddies consulting "a blood-alcohol chart" before deciding whether to have another brewski. "Judge Kavanaugh liked beer and still very much likes beer". For someone who is not planning to drive, the question of how many beers are too many has little to do with the legal standard for DUI. Do you like beer, senator, or not?
Ramirez has told The New Yorker that Kavanaugh exposed himself to her while they were both students in the 1980s. Two other women besides Ford have also lodged public sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh.
