People With Alzheimer's, Related Dementias in U.S. to Double by 2060 — CDC

  • Five common misconceptions about Alzheimer's explained

"This study shows that as the US population increases, the number of people affected by Alzheimer's disease and related dementias will rise, especially among minority populations", said CDC Director Robert R. Redfield.

Health News - The number of people with Alzheimer's disease will almost triple over the next 40 years, unless something dramatic happens to change trends, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week.

But that number is estimated to increase to 13.9 million by 2060, equaling almost 3.3 percent of a projected population of 417 million people. The researchers suppose Hispanic Americans will have the highest escalation because of the anticipated population growth in the forthcoming decades. Governments have an obligation to support the 50 million people now living with dementia, and their families, which, again, is projected to increase exponentially to 152 million by 2050.

"The U.S. population of persons aged 65 years and above is expected to double from 46.5 million in 2014 to 83.7 million by 2060, but some groups will increase much faster than others", the team wrote in their report, published in the journal Alzheimer's and Dementia.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia.

Tilray has crashed more than 50% since its wild day of trading
Roughly an hour later, the share price slipped to US$151.40 before climbing back up to close at US$214.06, up 38.12 per cent. Citron Research said it remains short on Tilray, calling the stock's surge "beyond comprehension" in a Tweet Wednesday.

The devastating neurodegenerative disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and caring for the surviving sufferers costs hundreds of billions of dollars. Divided by ethnicity, among Hispanics, 12.2% were diagnosed with these conditions, along with 9.1% of American Indian and Alaska natives and10.3% of whites. Projections from the findings suggest that 8.5 million women and 5.4 million men will be living with the disease by 2060. "Early diagnosis is key to helping people and their families cope with loss of memory, navigate the health care system, and plan for their care in the future", Redfield said. Those figures are projected to rise to 8.5 million women and almost 5.4 million men by 2060. Additionally, more than 15 million family and friends provide care to people with Alzheimer's and other dementias.

If we are to make real progress towards addressing stigma and supporting those living with dementia, we need every government to develop awareness of and access to diagnosis for dementia.

Planning can help ease caregiver burden, added study lead author Kevin Matthews, of the CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

"It is important for people who think their daily lives are impacted by memory loss to discuss these concerns with a health care provider".
