Ford wants the FBI to investigate her claim before testifying. It said the telephone discussion ended with no decision.

On Thursday, a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll contained some very bad news for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh has repeatedly denied the allegations.

The Senate Judiciary Committee's chairman says Christine Blasey Ford must decide by Friday morning if she'll testify about her sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. But Ford's accusation has upended his confirmation process.

Trump said Ford "deserves" to be heard and should have an opportunity to share her story at a high-stakes hearing scheduled for Monday, which was thrown into turmoil when her lawyers requested an FBI investigation before she testifies. Republicans are anxious to move ahead to a vote by the committee, where they hold an 11-10 majority, and then by the full Senate, which they control, 51-49. Politico, citing an unnamed source, said Ford's lawyers wanted Kavanaugh to appear first. He said the committee is investigating Ford's accusation against Kavanaugh, but that "we have no power to commandeer an Executive Branch agency into conducting our due diligence". A flood of anti-Kavanaugh protesters also descended on Capitol Hill Thursday while more Senate offices reported receiving threats related to the nomination.

Blasey Ford, however, announced that she could not make it to the Monday hearing on the set date and would testify later in the week. Judge has told the committee he does not recall the incident and does not want to speak publicly. Assessing them would be not just the committee's 21 senators -only four of whom are women, all Democrats - but also millions of viewing voters.

The federal appellate judge was accused of sexually assaulting Christine Blasey Ford three decades ago at a party when they were in high school, and as Wednesday progressed, partisan lines on the best way forward began to emerge. "It's so obvious that these tactics are used just days before a very important event like a confirmation-it's right in the midst of the confirmation hearing-but these come up right before an election or a confirmation, and I think the Republicans need to take a stand".

In an interview with The Associated Press, she says she has talked to men who were happy she said that, because they want to be part of the movement too. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) to testify Monday.

"No one should make light of this situation", wrote Flake, who is retiring from the Senate at the end of his term. "They become the victim in the hearing".

Ford contends that in the 1980s, Kavanaugh groped her, attempting to take off her clothes while Judge was present.

What did Dr Ford's lawyer say?

"We got a little hiccup here with the Kavanaugh nomination, we'll get through this and we'll get off to the races", he said in a call with fellow Republicans, the Nevada Independent reports.

Several hours later, Judiciary wrote again to Katz, attaching a formal letter from Grassley inviting Ford to testify. Vice President Mike Pence would break a tie. "Fairness and respect dictate that she should have time to deal with this".

In a letter to Prof Ford's legal team, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said "it is not the FBI's role to investigate a matter such as this". But that wording fell short of a non-negotiable demand.

Kavanaugh has issued a short statement "categorically and unequivocally" denying the allegation. Trump refrained from tweeting about his nominee.

"Judge Kavanaugh has not asked to have the FBI investigate these claims".

Trump went on to suggest that he already considers Kavanaugh likely to surmount the row and be confirmed to the lifetime appointment. "He's going for the Supreme Court".
