  • Plane passengers suffer nose & ear bleeding as crew ‘forgot’ to maintain cabin pressure

Releasing a statement, Jet Airways said, "Jet Airways Mumbai-Jaipur flight today made an air turn back due to loss in cabin pressure".

The airline said the flight's cockpit crew was taken off scheduled duties pending an investigation.

Over 30 passengers had nosebleeds and many headaches, NDTV reported. Passengers with respiratory troubles were the ones immediately impacted by this until the pilots chose to turn back and land in Mumbai.

Passenger Marshak Hathi posted a picture of the chaos on Twitter.

Thirty-six passengers suffered from nose and ear bleed injuries, as well as headaches after the pilots failed to switch on the plane's cabin pressure, Lalit Gupta, deputy director general at India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation told The Hindustan Times.

Oxygen masks dropped from the cabin's ceiling. As the Boeing 737 began to climb, it became clear that the cabin was not pressurized.

Oxygen masks were deployed.

The DGCA has been asked to submit a report within 30 days, and take corrective measures in case of any deficiencies.

At 7.05 am, a passenger, Darshak Hathi, tweeted: "Panic situation due to technical fault in @jetairways 9W 0697 going from Mumbai to Jaipur".

"When I removed my mask it was full of blood".

Another added: "Just had an emergency landing".

Soon after the flight was turned back to the Mumbai airport, the passengers were quickly rushed to the doctors for medical aid. "We were calling out for the cabin crew, but even they were supposed to be masked under the circumstances", Mr. Hathi, who is an worldwide director with the Art Of Living foundation, said.

Authorities say a flight crew's failure to flip a switch caused a plane to depressurise over Mumbai, leaving passengers bleeding into oxygen masks and almost losing consciousness.

He figured that about five minutes had passed since take-off, and now he found it hard to breath. That's why you put those little masks on -immediately- if they drop down during your flight.

"I saw many people having nose bleeds..."

The flight turned back "due to loss in cabin pressure", according to a statement from the Indian worldwide airline. He said that these passengers are suffering from barotrauma.

31-year-old Melissa Texeira, who represents a USA university, was headed to Jaipur to attend an education fair for students. She added that the least the Jet Airways crew could have done was explained to us what was happening.

"The B737 aircraft, with 166 guests and 5 crew landed normally in Mumbai".

The aviation ministry has said the cockpit crew has been taken off duty pending investigation.

A passenger, who was in the flight, recalled a fellow passenger with bleeding nose.

Other passengers complained that they were forced to sit in the aircraft for long, no breakfast was served and there was no information from the airline.
