US President Donald Trump stood firmly by his Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh on Monday after allegations that the conservative judge sexually assaulted a woman when they were teenagers threatened to derail the nomination process.

In a letter to Grassley, Blasey Ford's attorneys wrote, "While Dr. Ford's life was being turned upside down, you and your staff scheduled a public hearing for her to testify at the same table as Judge Kavanaugh in front of two dozen U.S. Senators on national television to relive this traumatic and harrowing incident". But in the days since she publicly accused Kavanaugh of assaulting her at a party more than three decades ago, the lawyers said, she has been the target of "vicious harassment and even death threats". ("I feel like she has something wrong with her", said one, "and I am surprised no one has caught this.") But the woman accusing Kavanaugh is Christine B. Ford of Palo Alto University.

Hill was first approached by the Judiciary Committee and was invited to provide background information on Thomas because she had worked with him, according to a New York Times article the following month, which cites a written statement from Hill that was sent to news organizations. "She is not prepared to talk with them at a hearing on Monday". "I spoke with the Judiciary Committee about it early in September, and through a number of discussions, it was not until the 20th of September that an F.B.I. investigation was suggested to me", Hill said.

"The allegation does not involve any potential federal crime", a Justice Department spokesman said in a statement.

"Many of us heard a buzz about it indirectly with few specific details".

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., accused Democrats of using their calls for an FBI investigation as a ploy.

A Justice Department spokesperson said the Federal Bureau of Investigation had forwarded the initial letter from Sen. "The F.B.I. conducts background checks on judicial nominees". Only if the White House "demands it" will the FBI investigate the claim, Carlson said.

The assault purportedly took place in 1982 when Ms Blasey Ford was 15 and Mr Kavanaugh 17. Trump blasted Democrats, and in particular Sen.

Professor Blasey Ford says Mr Kavanaugh pinned her on a bed and tried taking off her clothes during the high school party. Republicans have been careful to be seen as giving Ford a chance to be heard, mindful that outright dismissal of her accusation could hurt on Election Day.

For all of the kudos they got when signing Neymar, Les Parisiens are also being short-changed. It made for painful viewing for PSG coach Thomas Tuchel, who had seen similar scenes before.

Kavanaugh has repeatedly denied the allegation.

"This is a completely false allegation". She is not simply "Judge Kavanaugh's accuser", Hill writes. "I really would want to see what she has to say".

"Because this never happened, I had no idea who was making this accusation until she identified herself yesterday", Kavanaugh added.

Democrats have pushed back on the hearing.

"It is not the FBI's role to investigate a matter such as this", wrote Grassley, who also sent a letter to committee Democrats formally rejecting their bid for the FBI to investigate. "We'll have to make a decision".

Feinstein said in a statement she supported Ford's proposal. "A proper investigation must be completed, witnesses interviewed, evidence reviewed and all sides spoken to". But panel chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said repeated efforts to reach her had failed, and Democrats said they didn't know her plans. "The only reason I am involved is that Dr. Christine Blasey Ford remembers me as the other person in the room during the alleged assault". "We're better than this".

Ford is open to testifying to lawmakers, but not before the FBI investigates the matter, one of her lawyers, Lisa Banks, said Tuesday night.

Senate leaders, under pressure from fellow Republicans who wanted a fuller, open examination of the allegations, announced the move late on Monday.
