  • Houses sit in floodwaters caused by Hurricane Florence in Lumberton N.C

The effluvia even in the best of time can affect human health, according to a study released online this week by Duke University.

Trump visited a church in New Bern, a town of 30,000 located at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent rivers that was hit especially hard by flooding, and joined volunteers in passing out boxed meals to locals in a drive-through line.

National Basketball Association legend and Charlotte Hornets Chairman Michael Jordan is helping residents of the Carolinas affected by Hurricane Florence. The president also pledging federal disaster aid, and shared words of encouragement to those receiving food.

"Our people took a gut punch", Cooper said after the president's arrival. "We're with you all the way".

At Horry County's emergency operations center, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said the storm had likely been the worst disaster in the state's history, but warned it wasn't over yet.

The latest victims in SC were identified as Wendy Wenton, 45, and Nicolette Green, 43, by the Marion County Coroner, US media report.

"There is going to be both more inland flooding and more storm-surge, ocean-related flooding because the ocean is getting higher", said Brion Callori, senior vice president of engineering and research at commercial property insurance firm FM Global.

Heavy flooding from Hurricane Florence is causing a pig poop problem in North Carolina. However, Trump's description of the hurricane being one of the "wettest" storms in history "from the standpoint of water" caught the eye of many Twitter users.

"We're ready.to do whatever we have to do to make this flawless", Trump said Wednesday. "You will get a lot of water, we see it, it's coming down".

"I love that area".

Trump visited a neighborhood in Conway where residents were loading moving vans in anticipation of more flooding.

Wilmington, just down the coast, remains nearly completely cut off by flooding from the Cape Fear River and earlier storm surges from Florence. At the time, it seemed to reflect Trump's brand of playfulness. He told Hurricane Harvey victims in Houston the same thing past year. Many people in the crowd smiled and raised their phones to record the moment. He also said that Democrats would start to criticize the government response to the storm, and "this will be a total lie, but that's what they do, and everybody knows it!"

The deadly 2017 hurricane season afforded Trump several opportunities to travel to storm-torn swaths of the country and address grieving citizens - instead, critics said, he largely kept attention focused on himself.
