  • SpaceX announces new plan to send tourist around Moon

SpaceX has announced a new plan to launch a tourist around the Moon using its Big Falcon Rocket (BFR), a massive launch vehicle that is being created to carry people into deep space.

The company made its announcement from its headquarters in Hawthorne, California - not far from where the Emmy awards were being handed out at Los Angeles's Microsoft Theater Monday evening.

SpaceX livestreamed the big news after teasing the announcement last week and calling it "an important step toward enabling access for everyday people who dream of traveling to space".

In answer to a query about whether Musk himself would be the passenger, he tweeted an emoji of a Japanese flag.

Elon Musk, the founder of the rocket company SpaceX, plans to reveal who the company's first lunar space tourist will be on Monday night.

He is expected to lift-off on the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR), a launch system unveiled by Mr Musk in 2016.

In a news conference scheduled to start at 9pm ET, SpaceX will introduce its first paying private customer who will ride a spacecraft around the Moon just for the fun of it. Those tests will take the form of progressively higher up-and-down flights at an earthly launch facility.

Trump imposes tariffs on $200B more of Chinese goods
China has vowed to retaliate further against any new U.S. tariffs, with state-run media arguing for an aggressive "counterattack". Tariffs on steel (of 25 percent) and aluminum (10 percent) took effect in March, raising material costs for US manufacturers.

The 106 metre (347 feet) long ship was first announced past year, and Musk said the ship will contain up to 40 cabins which will have enough space for 100 people.

SpaceX's CEO is clearly chomping at the bit to reveal more information about the company's newest BFR iteration, hopefully now closing in on something close to what will actually enter production and begin flight testing.

In February, SpaceX launched the Falcon Heavy for the first time.

Early Monday, he tweeted out two images of the BFR space craft that will be taking this mysterious passenger into the moon's outer orbit.

The BFR spacecraft's shape is reminiscent of the space shuttle, the bus-like U.S. spaceships that carried astronauts to space 135 times from 1981 to 2011.

Virgin's trip will cost about $250,000.

Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla Motors, has drawn attention in recent months over his erratic behavior. Two years later would mark the last time NASA astronauts would visit the lunar surface.
