Deadly storm Florence drenched North Carolina over the weekend, with up to 40 inches of rain falling since the storm made landfall last week.

An additional 2 to 5 inches of rain is expected with isolated areas of 8 inches possible through Tuesday in the Carolinas and Virginia. Radar showed parts of the sprawling storm over six states, with North and SC at the centre.

Across North Carolina, 26,000 people were being housed in 157 shelters after escaping their homes in advance of the flood waters.
