  • President Muhammadu Buhari has accepted the resignation of finance minister Mrs Kemi Adeosun

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday accepted the resignation of Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun, who said she stepped down over allegations of using a forged certificate to avoid participation in the country's mandatory one-year national youth service scheme.

Mrs Adeosun explained in her resignation letter that the PREMIUM TIMES investigation was true, but said she did not know the certificate was forged as she relied on associates who helped obtain it after she returned from the UK.

In 1982, the acting Finance Minister joined Kaduna State Ministry of Finance as an accountant with an aspiration of becoming the state's Accountant General.

She holds a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in Kaduna, where she was born, and an MBA from the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State.

The 55-year-old acting minister rose to become Chief Finance Officer of Nigeria Mobile Telecommunications, MTEL, after joining in September, 2005.

Ahmed before her new appointment was the Minister of State, Budget and National Planning.

She said, "having never worked in NYSC, visited the premises, been privy to nor familiar with their operations, I had no reason to suspect that the certificate was anything but genuine". For me at my own end as the first son of the ministry, for now it's a no.

"The party invites Nigerians to note that President Muhammadu Buhari, whose administration has become notorious for shielding its many fraudulent and corrupt officials, could not summon the rectitude to sack Mrs. Adeosun, adding that she would have still been in office, if not for the sustained uproar by Nigerians and global creditors".

"Upon inquiry as to my status relating to NYSC, I was informed that due to my residency history and having exceeded the age of thirty (30), I was exempted from the requirement to serve".
