A new high-definition video and photos taken from the International Space Station show the size of scope of Hurricane Florence, a Category 4 storm heading toward landfall in the Southeast U.S. later this week.

"The National Hurricane Center forecasts additional strengthening for Florence before it reaches the coastline of North Carolina and SC early Friday, Sept. 14", NASA wrote in the description of the video.

Hurricane Florence, the Category 2 storm heading straight for my parents' SC house, has the country on high alert.

Residents along a large swathe of the United States coastline have fled their homes as forecasters warned Hurricane Florence could stay just offshore for days before pushing inland.

"The better prepared anybody is, it can potentially reduce the impact of the claims if you can better harden your facilities against damage", said Robert O'Brien, a managing director in the national property-claims practice at Marsh, a unit of Marsh & McLennan Cos. Some 3,000 people died in the aftermath of that storm.

North Carolina officials said there had been at least seven storm-related fatalities in the state, with unconfirmed reports of a further three deaths.

By Saturday, total rainfall could accumulate to 20 inches (51 centimetres) - or even 30 inches in places - in parts of the Carolinas and Virginia, the NHC said.

"This storm is going to be a direct hit", he added.

"They told me to bring a pillow and blanket", Whisler said. President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency on the federal level Tuesday for the Carolinas and Virginia.

Some 7,000 guard members are ready to mobilize in North Carolina, while 1,100 will be activated in SC.

Forecasters anxious the storm's damage will be all the worse if it lingers on the coast.

"This is a horrific nightmare storm from a meteorological perspective", University of Georgia meteorology professor Marshall Shepherd said.

Abigail Darlington, covers the city of Charleston for the South Carolina Post and Courier.

"I ask all Georgians to join me in praying for the safety of our people and all those in the path of Hurricane Florence", Deal said. The only exception was Edisto Beach - that and other areas to the north remain under evacuation orders.

"This rainfall would produce catastrophic flash flooding and significant river flooding", the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

"Been through it!" Belli said, referring to Hurricane Hugo, which caused widespread damage in SC in 1989.

"It's now not precisely equal to Hugo, but it without a doubt is forecast to be a serious hurricane making landfall, so in that sense this is seemingly to be adore Hugo", National Climate Service meteorologist Jake Wimberley informed The Charlotte Observer.

Large and risky, Hurricane Florence is drawing closer to the coast of the Carolinas, where it threatens to become the most intense storm to strike the region in at least 25 years, since Hugo.
