NEW BERN, N.C. - A day after blowing ashore with 90 miles per hour winds, Florence practically parked itself over land all day long and poured on the rain.

A mother and baby were killed when a tree fell on their home in Wilmington.

More than 2 feet of rain already had fallen in places, and the drenching continued as Florence practically parked itself over the Carolinas.

In New Bern, a riverfront city near the North Carolina coast that saw storm surges up to 10 feet (three meters), authorities were rescuing stranded residents and taking stock of damages. A town spokesman said between 60 and 75 people were awaiting rescue on Saturday.

Nearly 800,000 people are reported to be without power already in North Carolina, and officials have warned restoring electricity could take days or even weeks.

Atlantic Beach on North Carolina's Outer Banks islands had already received 30 inches of rain, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

"If it rises any higher, I'll break out the jon boat and go somewhere", said Watson, 62, a retired building inspector.

The video generated a series of mixed reactions from people on social media, with many calling out the journalist for allegedly overstating the impact of the storm.

The body of a 77-year-old man, also in Kinston, was found by his family at his home, and it is believed he died when he was blown down after going outside to check on his hunting dogs, Dail said. It blew ashore along a mostly boarded-up, emptied-out stretch of coastline. It was downgraded Friday afternoon to a tropical storm with winds of 70 mph (110 kph) before its core slogged into coastal SC hours later.

Florence's forward movement during the day slowed to a near-standstill - sometimes it was going no faster than a human can walk - and that enabled it to pile on the rain.

Other areas throughout the region reported flooded and impassable roads, downed trees and power lines and power outages of more than 125,000 customers.

Though the popular North Carolina tourist destination seems to have been spared the worst of Florence's wrath, the islands still have some of the fastest rates of sea level rise in the world, almost an inch a year.

As Florence Surges Forward, Rethinking What Hurricane Preparation Looks Like
EST, the storm was centered 280 miles east southeast of Wilmington , North Carolina , and was moving northwest at 17 mph. But his partner, Emily Whisler, said she will stay at the university where she is a resident in the psychiatry program.

Rivers and creeks rose toward historic levels, threatening flash flooding that could devastate communities and endanger dams, roads and bridges.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster urged patience, emphasizing that his state had never seen "a hurricane staying on top of us for this long".

Authorities warned, too, of the threat of mudslides and the risk of an environmental disaster from floodwaters washing over industrial waste sites and hog farms.

Hurricane-force winds were extending out up to 80 miles from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extended up to 195 miles, the center said.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence broke a North Carolina rainfall record that had stood for nearly 20 years: Preliminary reports showed Swansboro got more than 30 inches (75 centimeters) and counting, obliterating the mark set in 1999, when Hurricane Floyd dropped just over 24 inches (60 centimeters) on the state. That's enough to fill the Chesapeake Bay or cover the entire state of Texas with almost 4 inches (10 centimeters) of water, he calculated.

And there could be 10 inches (25 cm) in south-western Virginia.

The National Weather Service reported wind gusts of up to 21 miles per hour on September 14 morning in Columbia.

Grounded: More than 2,400 flights canceled. The resulting flooding forced swift-water rescues and left several people dead. "You may need to move up to the second story, or to your attic, but WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU".

Boat teams including volunteers rescued some 360 residents, including Sadie Marie Holt, 67, who first tried to row out of her neighborhood during Florence's assault.

Strong winds have got nothing on this tough guy.

Zaytoun said he didn't leave his home because he knew he wouldn't have been able to get back to it once the flooding began.

"I'll grow concerned if the water starts getting close to my truck".
