Boston Celtics guard Jabari Bird pleaded not guilty on Thursday to charges of domestic assault, strangulation, and kidnapping.

The Celtics, meanwhile, made a statement of their own following the latest developments. I do not condone violence against women.

Bird choked the woman unconscious, threw her against the wall and dragged her by the ankles when she tried to leave his apartment in the Brighton neighborhood, police said. "I am hopeful that in due time and process, I will be able to regain everyone's trust".

The woman told police that Bird would strangle her until she fell "limp" and that once she caught her breath, he would begin his attack again.

Bird is being represented by Brian T. Kelly, a former federal prosecutor who spent years purusing and then successfully prosecuting James "Whitey" Bulger; and Robert Fisher, who prosecuted Massachusetts Probation Department officials in a case that was overturned on appeal, the Globe has learned.

Bird was ordered to not have any contact with the alleged victim or any witnesses, and he must stay away from her college.

The Celtics said in their statement that, per the NBA's policy on domestic violence, "matters of this kind" are handled by the league.

As reported by TMZ Sports and CBS Sports, the assault is alleged to have lasted for several hours, during which the victim claims to have been strangled at least a dozen times.

The Celtics have acknowledged they know of Bird's arrest, but have declined further comment since the weekend.

Bird was transferred Saturday to an undisclosed hospital for what police have called an "evaluation" that continued until Thursday when it appeared doctors treating him had concluded he was sufficently healthy to appear in court. Drafted 56th overall by the Celtics in 2017, Bird signed a two-year, US$2.9 million (A$4m) deal in late July.
