Nike’s Colin Kaepernick gamble already paying off

  • NFL bounces back from down TV ratings and Trump attacks with strong opening weekend

Truett McConnell University in Georgia said they will no longer sell Nike merchandise in response to Nike's recent deal with controversial former National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick. That fall has since been made up and more, with the current price slightly besting the company's previous high of $83.00 from Wednesday and an earlier peak of $82.95 on August 21, 2018.

A large billboard stands on top of a Nike store showing former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick at Union Square, Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, in San Francisco.

Nike's controversial new advertising campaign has proved highly effective.

Nike faced backlash over its deal with Kaepernick.

"The brand has a rich history of positioning itself as a progressive company that connects with its customers through conflict constructive conflict", Pandya told NBC News.

Caner said the university, located in Cleveland, Ga., would reconsider a relationship with Nike if the company apologizes to the military and law enforcement.

Eminem is, once again, addressing allegations of homophobia after he included anti-LGBTQ language on his latest album. This came in the middle of another white-rapper feud for Machine Gun Kelly , against G-Eazy.

The campaign also has drawn the ire of President Trump, who tweeted that Nike was getting "absolutely killed with anger and boycotts". Kaepernick said the proceeds would go to the Know Your Rights Camp, a campaign he founded to raise youth awareness about self-empowerment and interacting with law enforcement.

The ad boosted how positively the 18- to 29-year-old age group thought of Nike by six percentage points from when the poll was taken nine months before.

According to data from Edison Trends, online sales of Nike products jumped 31 percent between the Sunday before and the Tuesday after Labor Day, almost double last year's 17 percent increase over the same time period.

The sporting goods giant, a member of the blue-chip Dow index, finished at $83.47 on Thursday, its highest-ever closing price, prompting applause on Twitter from basketball star and self-professed '#NikeLifer' LeBron James. The 30-year-old quarterback, who has not played since the end of that season, is now suing the NFL's 32 owners, alleging they conspired to keep him off the field.

Most people understood that Nike wasn't going to make a decision that tanked its bottom line, but in the immediate aftermath, the company's stock took a hit. Even if its increase in sales isn't sustainable, Nike likely isn't regretting its decision so far.
