A mother and her baby died when a tree fell on their home in Wilmington, North Carolina. The father was pulled from the home and transported to a local hospital with injuries, police said. TV station WNCN said the 78-year-old victim and was "trying to connect two extension cords outside in the rain".

Also, one person was killed while plugging in a generator, and a man was knocked to the ground while outside and died, authorities said.

Forecasters believe the biggest danger right now is the water, not the wind.

The National Hurricane Center said the area should also expect "life-threatening" storm surges, hurricane-strength wind gusts and "catastrophic" fresh water flooding as Hurricane Florence slowly churns inland.

The center of the storm is over eastern SC, but rain is continuing to fall throughout the state and is particularly heavy in the southern counties.

Maria came after two other deadly storms - Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Irma in Florida. Calls for help kept coming in as the wind picked up and the tide arrived, said city public information officer Colleen Roberts. "These are folks who are maybe in one-story buildings and they are seeing the floodwaters rise".

Tom Ballance said his wife went to Atlanta and he stayed behind in their New Bern home with their three dogs and a cat. "That's why we've been preaching to people that you have to get away from the water". "We're going to have to have patience, we're going to have to be careful and we're going to have to deal with a lot of water".

More than 80,000 people were already without power as the storm began buffeting the coast, and more than 12,000 were in shelters. Forecasters say the center of the eye of Hurricane Florence is about to make landfall near Wrightsville, North Carolina.

The hurricane center predicts as much as 101 centimeters (40 inches) of rain for some parts of North Carolina.

Cline said July was the wettest ever in that part of North Carolina, and the water table rose 21 inches higher than normal. More than 22,600 people were housed in 150 shelters statewide, including schools, churches and Wake Forest University's basketball arena. The White House said Friday U.S. President Donald Trump will travel to areas hit by Hurricane Florence next week, once it has been determined that his travel would not disrupt any rescue or recovery efforts.

North Carolina emergency management officials said more than 600,000 customers in North Carolina were without power.

More than 306,000 residents and businesses, mostly in eastern counties, were without power as of 5 a.m. Friday, according to online updates from Duke Energy, the N.C. Electric Cooperatives and smaller utility companies.

At the moment, there are no projected tropical storms in the seven-day forecast, said meteorologist Eswar Iyer of the National Weather Service's office in Wakefield. The slow-moving, hurricane - downgraded to a tropical storm around 5 p.m. Friday - is expected to linger over the area this weekend continuing to create a risky situation. They're predicting a potential million to 2.5 million people without power and so that is going to be a painstaking and unsafe process, so I'm telling people to stay where you are.
