Windows 10 warns users not to install Chrome and Firefox

Word comes from beta testers of the update report the screenshot below pops up if you try and install a competing browser on your PC. "You already have Microsoft Edge - the safer, faster browser for Windows 10", the pop-up reads, with accompanying buttons that either open Edge or proceed with installation. Try double-clicking your download.

This version of Windows 10 is now only available to Windows 10 Insiders, but will be rolled out to the public as part of Microsoft's Windows 10 October 2018 update. By going into Apps & Features in the Apps pages within the Settings app, you can turn these prompts off. Head into the settings and disable app recommendations. Many users cited on Twitter that this prompt shows up while downloading Chrome or Firefox installer on the latest "Insider" release Windows 10. Since this is an A/B test, not all installations of Build 17755 show this prompt.

"Don't install LibreOffice or OpenOffice!"

For years now, Microsoft has been fighting what really feels like a losing battle against Google and Mozilla, two big players in the internet browser space.

Imagine a constant storm of warnings telling you not to install the software you want or need. Maybe all those people clinging to Windows 7 are on to something after all. How do you get those people to give Edge a chance?

Oops, Microsoft Is Doing It Again

A "Do this anyway" button also appears in the Windows SmartScreen popups, which warns you before you run a downloaded application that might potentially be unsafe. This was also confirmed by a Microsoft spokesperson to ZDNet. Great job, Windows team. There are a number of other places where Microsoft promotes Edge, and it's generally quite annoying. Google, too, throws up prompts to use Chrome whenever Google sites are visited using Edge or Firefox.

Even more frustrating is the fact that Windows displays this prompt even when you're installing yet another browser. For example, searching with Cortana always open Bing in Edge unless you install a third-party hack.

The prompts are included in versions of Windows 10 that trial novel future features.

Let's assume you ignore these reminders and download Firefox or Chrome.

People talk about how Google pushes Chrome, but that's pretty different. People use Windows in the real world to run a variety of applications, not just connect to Microsoft services in half-baked "Universal" apps, "Metro" apps, or whatever we're calling them now. Users should not be stripped of their ability to choose the browser they want. To do that requires focusing on making Edge better than the alternatives and marketing it as such.
