  • Just an absolute embarrassment

Storm surges could push as far as 2 miles (3 km) inland, NHC said, while heavy rains were forecast to extend into the Appalachian Mountains, affecting parts of Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia.

"Even the rescuers can not stay there", he said.

"In a matter of seconds, my house was flooded up to the waist, and now it is to the chest", said Peggy Perry, who along with three relatives, was trapped early Friday in her New Bern home, according to CNN.

The NHC said hurricane-force winds extended outward 80 miles from the center of the storm and tropical storm-force winds extended almost 195 miles out.

The governor of neighbouring North Carolina ordered an evacuation of the Outer Banks, barrier islands that are a popular tourist destination, and parts of coastal Dare County, while a state of emergency was declared in Virginia. Florence slowed its approach to the USA today and was forecast to turn south, stalling along the North Carolina and SC coast and bringing with it torrential rain, high winds and a unsafe storm surge tomorrow through Saturday.

Hurricane Florence brought a storm surge of some 3 meters (10 feet) as it began battering the U.S. east coast early on Friday.

"This is an absolute life-threatening scenario".

Hurricane Florence has arrived. As the recovery from past storms continues in many rural towns, the next storm is about to strike.

"Its slow movement will allow rain to continue to pile up in areas from Jacksonville to Wilmington seeing as much as 10" to 20" of rainfall.

Officials in the potential path of Florence urged people to evacuate their coastal homes and directed drivers away from the coast.

Hurricane Florence made landfall outside Wilmington, North Carolina, about 7:15 a.m. on Friday as a Category 1 storm. "It's something we haven't seen. ever".

The storm made landfall at Wrightsville Beach at 7:15 a.m., with maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center. Florence should weaken to a tropical storm after 24 hours and then to below tropical storm strength after 48 hours.

That said, the storm is still expected to stall once it hits the Wilmington coast, with weather officials early Thursday raising the expected total rainfall for Wilmington to 35 inches - weather officials had predicted 30 inches for Wilmington in briefings released Wednesday.

Rail and cruise ship travel have also been affected by the risky storm.

After landfall, the storm is expected to linger over the area for a few days, which would result in rising river levels and lakes.

And the storm is still expected to bring catastrophic winds, rain, storm surges and flooding, the National Hurricane Center briefing said.

An officer inspecting the Triangle Motor Inn found a "basketball-sized hole" in a corner room and firefighters said the building had suffered life-threatening structural damage. "The combination of a unsafe storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline". He said only about 300,000 of the 700,000 people who live in the mandatory evacuation zone have left.

The contraflow will end Thursday at noon on 501 and at 6 p.m. on I-26.

Officials say more than 100 people have already been rescued in the area overnight.

Governor Roy Cooper requested the added disaster declaration on Thursday (local time) because he anticipates what his office calls "historic major damage" across the state from the hurricane.
