English soccer team Tottenham Hotspur's French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris arrives at Westminster magistrates court to answer a charge of a drinking and driving offense, in London, Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018.

Just weeks after playing a key role in France's World Cup glory, Lloris was pulled over in a routine stop on August 24 at 2:20 am in Gloucester Place, central London.

His blood alcohol concentration was 80 micrograms per litre of air, more than twice the legal limit in the United Kingdom (35 micrograms per liter).

Fitch also told the court that police saw Lloris driving at 15mph in a 30mph zone, and veering towards parked cars before correcting himself.

The court heard that Lloris veered his auto "towards parked vehicles" before correcting himself and went through a red light. Vomit was discovered within the auto, and Lloris had to be helped from the vehicle by officers.

The maximum punishment for drink-driving in Britain is a six-month jail term, although fines and temporary driving bans are more common. Not only were you putting your own life at risk but also that of your passenger.

Tottenham were heavily linked with the player throughout the summer, while Chelsea were also said to be keen. One position that he desperately tried to strengthen was the centre-back position.

The court heard that the goalkeeper had been out at a restaurant that evening, where he had been bought drinks by other customers. The legal limit in England and Wales is 35mcg.

"On July 15 he was arguably the proudest man on the planet [after France's World Cup triumph]", Mr Sonn said.

"I've spoken with him, he realises his mistake and he's sorry for it", said Deschamps.

Mr Sonn also acknowledged his client's fall from grace after being arrested.

Lloris was seen exiting the court in a dark suit surrounded by a crowd of journalists.

Lloris, who joined Spurs from Olympique Lyonnais in 2012, apologised for the incident after he was charged by the Metropolitan Police last month.
