Novichok Suspects: We Only Went To Salisbury To See The Cathedral

  • Russians accused by UK 'victims of coincidence'

The interview reportedly featured two men who physically resembled Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, who were charged with attempted murder and the use of military-grade nerve agent Novichok in the attack on former Russian agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury.

The men, who bore a strong resemblance to the pictures of the suspects released by Britain, made the claim in an interview with the head of the Kremlin-backed RT news network. They then chose to return the next day.

Statements by the two Russians "are not credible", the British lawmaker who represents the city in parliament said on Thursday.

When asked by RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan whether they also had a counterfeit bottle of designer perfume United Kingdom police said contained the nerve agent, Borishov said: "Isn't it silly for decent lads to have women's perfume? We got wet, took the nearest train and came back" to London, they told RT, Russia's state-run worldwide broadcaster.

"Our friends had been suggesting for a long time that we visit this wonderful town", one of the men said of the Salisbury in a short clip of the interview played by RT.

"Well, we came there [to the UK] on 2 March, then went to a railway station to see the timetable". Russian Federation has denied any involvement.

British intelligence found the novichok was stored in a fake Nina Ricci perfume bottle, but the two suspects said that would be a ridiculous way for them to transport poison, which they denied having, as it would be "silly for decent lads" to have women's perfume. He said that they "maybe approached Skripal's house" while in Salisbury, but only unintentionally, as they "didn't know where it was located".

Questioned on whether the pair were civilians, Mr Putin replied: 'Of course they are civilians'.

The UK has described them as agents of Russia's military intelligence service, the GRU.

The City Stay Hotel, where Russian suspects Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov stayed, is pictured in Bow, east London, on September 5, 2018.

Skripal - a former Russian military intelligence colonel who betrayed dozens of agents to Britain's MI6 foreign intelligence service - and his daughter were found slumped unconscious on a bench in the English city of Salisbury in March.

RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan said the pair had called her mobile because they wanted to tell their story.

Mr Skripal is a former GRU agent who secretly spied for Britain before being pardoned by the Kremlin and exchanged with among others - glamour agent Anna Chapman.

When asked to reveal personal details about themselves or explain why they were sharing a hotel room or taking trips together, Boshirov said: "Let's not pry into our private lives".

Asked by Simonyan whether they had the perfume bottle that had been shown as evidence by United Kingdom authorities, Boshirov said: "Is it silly for decent lads to have women's perfume?"

British prosecutors said last week they had "sufficient evidence" to charge the two Russian nationals in connection with the attack on March 4.
