"Monster" Hurricane Florence aims to drench Carolinas

The storm, which is poised to affect millions this week in the southeastern US, is "expected to bring life-threatening storm surge and rainfall" to North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, and parts of the Mid-Atlantic states, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Florence, now a Category 2 hurricane, is forecast to unleash extreme storm surge, possibly historic flooding rains, and damaging winds in the Carolinas beginning Thursday.

Tropical Storm Isaac was expected to pass south of Puerto Rico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Cuba, while Hurricane Helene was moving northward away from land.

"A category five is 157mph or above, we certainly flirt with that before we see a little bit of weakening as we see it approaching the Carolinas coastline on Thursday, likely during the evening".

On Tuesday evening, the National Hurricane Center issues storm surge warnings for the areas around the Outer Banks in North Carolina and the South Santee River in SC.

Tecklenburg said his flood-prone city is preparing for "copious rain" by clearing out the city's drainage system and getting boats and portable pumps ready.

National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham warns that a slight shift in Florence's forecast track does not mean that some communities north of the storm are now in the clear.

The storm is now classified as a "major hurricane", meaning wind speeds are greater than 110 miles per hour. "Nonetheless, there still would be a very life threatening storm surge of somewhere around 10 to 15 feet".

Statements by the two Russians "are not credible", the British lawmaker who represents the city in parliament said on Thursday. RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan said the pair had called her mobile because they wanted to tell their story.

Florence is one of four named storms in the Atlantic.

Hurricane Helene is heading north to open sea off the coast of the U.S. and now poses no danger to land after the storm hit cooler waters in the Atlantic.

"This storm is. nothing like you've ever seen", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said, according to CNN. Lennon, the chair of the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Department at Massachusetts Maritime Academy, says the biggest mistake during Hurricane Katrina - which claimed 1,833 lives - was that officials only ordered evacuations 24 hours before it hit New Orleans in 2005, and by then it was too late. "Now it might be time for the exam", he said.

Officials in several states have declared states of emergency, including in the Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia and Maryland, where coastal areas are still recovering from summer storms. Even if you've ridden out storms before, this one is different.

According to the latest models, the coastal areas of Charleston and Berkeley counties have the highest risk in the Lowcountry region for unsafe winds that could destroy trees, structures and create massive power outages.

US President Donald Trump has authorised emergency measures to free up federal funds to help those responding to the storm.

"I'm scared we'll get 30 inches or more of rain", said Carol Trojniar, 69, a longtime Wilmington resident and retired real estate agent who has never experienced a Category 4 hurricane. Cars and trucks full of people and belongings streamed inland.
