  • Papadopoulos lawyers released a memo on Friday seeking a reduced jail sentence for their client lying to the FBI when interviewed in January 2017

Memos authored by House Republicans and Democrats, now declassified, also show that information about Papadopoulos' contacts with Russian intermediaries triggered the FBI's counterintelligence investigation in July 2016 into potential coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign.

Mr. Papadopoulos was pictured in March, 2016, sitting at a table with Mr. Trump, then-campaign adviser Jeff Sessions who went on to become U.S. Attorney-Ggeneral, and other foreign policy campaign advisers.

Prosecutors said Papadopoulos used his contacts with the professor, identified in court papers as Joseph Mifsud, to elevate his status within the campaign and lobby for a meeting between Trump and Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin.

In court filings, Mueller's team claimed Papadopoulos' lies "caused damage" caused damage to the government's Russian collusion investigation.

In asking the court for leniency, Papadopoulos said he made "a bad mistake, for which I have paid a awful price, and am deeply ashamed", and that he was motivated to lie to the Federal Bureau of Investigation try to "create distance between the issue, myself, and the president".

Papadopoulos' defense attorney, Thomas Breen, pointed fingers at President Donald Trump. But he attended foreign policy meetings with candidate Trump and then-Sen.

"Decisions", Papadopoulos tweeted late last month, apparently in reference to the possibility that he might rescind his guilty plea.

Papadopoulos said even his family was concerned about his romantic relationship and suspected his wife was a Russian spy.

Anonymous New York Times op-ed sparks frenzy of amateur linguists, sleuths
He said that without that detail on the op-ed author's story, "I wouldn't have used it". The Sunday shows surfaced top-level denials from Trump officials.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents interviewed Papadopoulos in January 2017, and he lied about his April 2016 conversation with Joseph Mifsud, a Maltese professor working in London who had ties to Russian officials.

"Caught off-guard by an impromptu interrogation, Mr Papadopoulos misled investigators to save his professional aspirations and preserve a perhaps misguided loyalty to his master", the statement said.

"I see Papadopoulos today, I don't know Papadopoulos, I don't know".

Moss said he thought Papadopoulos' remorse was genuine.

In hindsight, he said in court, he recognizes that was wrong and "might have harmed the investigation". He wasn't committed either way but it was - I took it as he was thinking. The exchanges came shortly after he joined Trump's campaign and months before USA authorities learned that Russian intelligence officers had stolen huge troves of emails from Democratic political organizations.

Prosecutors asked for a sentence of as long as six months in jail, telling Moss that Papadopoulos failed to provide "substantial assistance" to investigators and disclosed what he did only after he was confronted with his own records.

When Papadopoulos pleaded guilty previous year, he pledged to help the special counsel's office with its investigation.

For a time, Papadopoulos also looked to be a key informant.
