Japan: Honshu braces for yet more floods with Typhoon Jebi

  • Super Typhoon Jebi on Friday

Local media warned that the wind speeds Jebi is packing are strong enough to bring down traditional-style wooden houses and power poles, and urged people in affected areas to avoid non-essential travel.

Jebi - whose name means "swallow" in Korean - is the latest harsh weather to hit Japan this summer.

The strong winds sent a 2,591-tonne tanker crashing into a bridge connecting Kansai airport, which is built on a man-made island in a bay, to the mainland.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also cancelled a scheduled trip to Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island, to oversee the Government's response to the typhoon, Kyodo said.

By the time the typhoon makes landfall, it's sustained winds are forecast to be around winds are 170kmph with gusts nearer to 200kmph.

After making landfall somewhere on the main island of Shikoku or Kii Peninsula on Tuesday, the typhoon is expected to pass over the Sea of Japan, the agency said, adding that it will likely weaken to an extratropical cyclone there.

Categorized as "very strong" by the agency based on the strength of its top winds, Jebi would be the strongest typhoon to make landfall in Japan since 1993 if it maintains its force, an agency official said at an emergency press conference.

He also emphasized the importance of sticking to the plan even when you have a one goal advantage. Sunday's win was the fourth for the Hornets in as many games this season in the league.

The storm comes as some 27,000 people in Nagato, Yamaguchi Prefecture, were temporarily ordered to evacuate Saturday due to torrential rain.

Around 87mm (3.4 inches) of rain had drenched some areas in an hour on Tuesday morning. Shinkansen bullet train services between Tokyo and Hiroshima were suspended and Universal Studios Japan, a popular amusement park near Osaka, was closed.

Video posted on Twitter showed a small part of the roof of Kyoto train station falling to the ground.

Over 600 flights in Japan were cancelled on Tuesday following a prediction of heavy rainfall and strong winds in certain regions.

Typhoon Jebi is expected to make landfall around midday Tuesday near areas still recovering from deadly record rains last month.

Japan has been hit by extreme weather since the beginning of July that included record-breaking heat as well as devastating floods and landslides.
