The day before, Opiyo tweeted that Wine had been "violently arrested" and "bundled into a police ambulance" as he was on his way out of the country to seek medical treatment in the United States.

Another lawyer, Robert Amsterdam, wrote: "Now that Bobi Wine is finally safely en route on a flight, we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to his local lawyers, his family, friends, and supporters who refused to back down in the face of extreme pressure and intimidation".

His aides say he was re-arrested at Uganda's main worldwide airport where he was planning to board a plane to Washington to seek further medical treatment.

"He's in tremendous pain and suffered very serious injuries", Mr Amsterdam had said of the star's condition.

But in a statement, Barbie said that even after attaining a medical report referring Bobi Wine overseas, the Police went on to brutally arrest and clobber him. His lawyers say the treason charges are false. Police said the two needed to undergo diagnosis by government physicians so that authorities can verify their medical problem. He was initially charged in a court martial for possession of illegal weapons.

In July, the Constitution was amended to remove the presidential age limit of 75 years, meaning Museveni, 74, can run again for president in 2021.
