A Ugandan opposition Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine has arrived in the United States of America for treatment after being tortured while in detention in his home country.

Mr Fred Nyanzi, Bobi Wine's elder brother said the two were scheduled to leave the country later on Friday night.

He added: "We thank the world for standing with us. The lawyers have no idea where he is being taken and we're all really in shock", Robert Amsterdam told the BBC's Newsday programme. I will soon tell you what exactly happened to me since 13th August and what is next.

The lawmaker, who has been on and off life support at Lubaga Hospital, is now detained at Kiruddu Hospital with injuries he sustained in detention after being arrested over the Arua incident.

Kyagulanyi posted in his tweet a picture of himself sitting in a wheelchair and holding crutches, posing in an airport next to his wife.

In a telephone interview, Mr Emilian Kayima, police spokesperson said he will issue a statement to the effect. Zaake was flying to India for further treatment after being referred by Lubaga hospital.

Ugandan doctors on Friday examined Bobi before police allowed his medical trip.

Mr Ofwono Opondo, the executive director of the Uganda Media Centre, also dismissed fears that Bobi Wine could be rearrested, explaining that after the medical examination, the MP was free to do what he wanted, including travelling overseas. "As a result, Hon Kyagulanyi was halted from departure". Police say they are investigating the allegations.

The re-arrest of Kyagulanyi triggered fresh protests in Kampala on Friday.

The two parliamentarians were among a group of five lawmakers who were detained on August 13 in Uganda's northwestern town of Arua and accused of throwing stones at a presidential convoy during the campaign for a parliamentary seat.

According to the post, the musician-turned-politician cried out in pain as he was whisked away.

Ssentamu has emerged as a powerful opposition voice among youth frustrated by Museveni, especially after the constitution was changed a year ago to remove an age limit on the presidency.
