Pentagon Announces Military Parade Will Be Postponed Until Next Year

  • The cost for Trump's controversial military parade to be held several days before Veterans Day is reportedly going to top $90 million

U.S. defence officials have postponed a planned Veterans Day weekend military parade through the streets of Washington DC until at least 2019.

The cost for the parade would reportedly be split between $50 million from the Pentagon and $42 million for other agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security.

President Donald Trump said in February that a military parade in Washington would be "great for the spirit of the country", but that it would need to come at a "reasonable cost".

Trump decided he wanted a military parade Washington after he attended France's Bastille Day celebration in the centre of Paris previous year. I would discount that and anybody who said that number, I'll nearly guarantee you one thing: They probably said, 'I need to stay anonymous'. "It was two hours on the button, and was military might, and I think a tremendous thing for France and the spirit of France". The Pentagon announced on Thursday that the November parade has been postponed indefinitely, and won't happen "until at least next year".

A Defense Department spokesman told USA TODAY earlier Thursday finals plans for the parade have not yet been approved and that costs could still change.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss early planning estimates that had not yet been finalised or released publicly. It also is expected to involve a number of military aircraft flyovers.

Mass Overdose Leaves Connecticut Park Strewn with Dozens of Drugged-Out Victims
The overdoses were reported over a 24-hour period and investigators are trying to determine what exactly sickened the victims. While no deaths were reported, a local official says at least two of the overdose victims had "life-threatening symptoms".

USA media were quick to highlight how the ballooning costs stood in contrast to his concern about the expense of conducting joint military exercises with South Korea.

A memo at the time said no tanks would be used so as not to damage the roads of the nation's capital. In fact, there would be no tanks, only wheeled vehicles, due to concerns over damaging the streets (and possibly, because the Pentagon wanted to scale back the authoritarian theme). The parade was planned to go along Pennsylvania Avenue, passing the Capitol, the White House, and the Trump International Hotel.

The United States has not held a major military parade in Washington since 1991 to mark the end of Operation Desert Storm. French President Emmanuel Macron is holding a gathering of world leaders in Paris on November 11 to celebrate the anniversary.

"The American Legion appreciates that our President wants to show in a dramatic fashion our nation's support for our troops", American Legion national commander Denise Rohan said in a statement.

"We're going to have to try and top it", he said.
