At least 25 people, many believed to be students, were killed when a suicide blast ripped through a school in a Shia area of Kabul on Wednesday, officials said, the latest assault on Afghanistan's war-weary capital.

The incident took place on Wednesday evening in the West of Kabul city in Dasht Barchi area after a suicide bomber targeted an education center.

The UN Security Council also issued a statement condemning the "heinous and cowardly" attack.

On Wednesday, a police source in Baghlan said that at least 35 Afghan National Army (ANA) officers and ten policemen were killed when the Taliban launched an attack on a military base in Baghlan-e-Markazi district on Tuesday night.

"Children are not, and must never be the target of violence", said UNICEF's executive director Henrietta Fore.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which follows nearly a week of high-profile assaults largely by the Taliban that have killed at least 311 people, mostly government soldiers and police.

Both the Taliban and the Islamic State group (IS) have carried out devastating, high-profile attacks in Kabul in recent months, but the Taliban quickly denied they were involved.

The Boston Globe: The newspaper that initiated the campaign published an editorial on Wednesday titled "Journalists are not the enemy".

Special units had arrived at the scene, Nasrat Rahimi, a spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, said.

"Clearing operations in Ghazni continue, but violence in the city, which is recovering from the Taliban's aftermath, has abated and the city remains quiet", said Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, spokesman for U.S Forces-Afghanistan. That assault began last Friday.

"The extreme human suffering caused by the fighting in Ghazni highlights the urgent need for the war in Afghanistan to end", said top United Nations official in Afghanistan, Tadamichi Yamamoto.

Police said earlier three people had been wounded in the 6-hour clash. And six young girls were killed after playing with an unexploded rocket shell, an official in the eastern province of Laghman told the wire service.

Mourners decried the unrelenting bloodshed, while others dismissed murmurings of possible ceasefires and peace negotiations between the government and the Taliban, even though the attack was claimed by IS.

"They were facing severe shortages of food and drinking water as the power supply was also suspended two days ago", a Taliban commander, who declined to be identified, said by telephone.

After five days of fighting, Afghan security forces have now regained control of the city, with Taliban fighters pulling out. "The fighting killed more than 120 security forces and civilians and more than 200 insurgents".
