  • Sorry Melbourne You’ve Lost The Title Of World’s Most Liveable City

Manchester is the most liveable city in the United Kingdom, according to a major annual survey conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

Two other Australian cities feature in the top-ranked places: Sydney (5th) and Adelaide (10th), while only one other European city made the top ten.

The rankings by The Economist's intelligence unit, are based on 30 factors in five groups: stability, infrastructure, education, health care and environment.

The global average score improved for the second year in a row, creeping up from 74.8 per cent to 75.7 per cent in 2018.

The rest of the top-10 cities are split between Japan (Osaka in 3rd place and Tokyo in 7th), and Canada (Calgary in 4th, and Vancouver 6th and Toronto tied with Tokyo in 7th).

Who beat Melbourne? None other than the criminal city of Vienna, best known for opera and having honestly way too many museums. "In its own turn, Singapore's score also registered an improvement in the public healthcare category, boasting the highest possible score", EIU said in its press release.

"Although they have been subject to high-profile terrorist attacks in recent years, which have shaken stability and led to cumbersome security measures, both cities have shown resilience in the face of adversity", the report adds.

The survey had been criticised previous year for demoting Manchester eight places after the May 22nd attack. No American city placed in the top 10.

However, fellow Asian cities Kuala Lumpur, Kathmandu, Colombo and Dhaka didn't fare as well, with all four listed among the nine cities whose livability ranking has declined in the past year.

The least liveable of the 140 cities assessed were Nigeria's Lagos, Bangladesh's Dhaka, with the Syrian city of Damascus at the bottom. Abidjan, Hanoi, Belgrade and Tehran saw the largest improvements in liveability over the last five years - more than five percentage points.
