  • A nightclub bouncer told the court Stokes ridiculed his appearance

Mark Spure, off-duty police community support officer (PCSO), gave evidence on Wednesday and said he saw a group of people involved in a "scuffle" as he left Mbargo nightclub in the Clifton area of Bristol.

The England cricketer is accused of affray following an alleged incident outside a Bristol nightclub during the early hours of 25 September previous year.

Stokes, 27, is on trial at Bristol Crown Court in southwest England for alleged affray, along with 27-year-old Ryan Ali and Ryan Hale, 28.

Cunningham said Stokes began to abuse him after he refused them entry.

Mr Ali and Mr Hale have also pleaded not guilty to affray and are on trial alongside the cricketer.

Further CCTV footage showed Stokes approaching a retreating Ali, Adams said, adding: "From this point it is very hard to identify who is involved".

"Ali responds by pushing Barry away, albeit with no significant force", he told the jury.

Mr Ali "seemed to be trying to back away or get away from the situation" before he was punched by Mr Stokes, he added.

Police constable Stacey Alway, who arrested Stokes at the scene, said he was calm and compliant when she dealt with him. "I walked into the road to try to separate the group and get in between them", Mr. Spure told the jury. Stokes said "matters had become too serious to ignore and that I had to intervene".

Shortly afterwards, he knocked out two men in a street brawl witnessed by the two gay men, jurors were told. "Although I can't remember anything specific now, I do recall that the language being used was homophobic in nature and was being directed at Kai and William by Ryan Hale and Ryan Ali". I said something like 'leave it out - you shouldn't be taking the piss because they're gay'.

"These men were speaking to the gay guys in what I would call a harsh and abusive way", the statement said.

Stokes told police: "I can hear on the video Alex shouting".

"At this point, I felt vulnerable and frightened".

"I am clear that I felt under threat of immediate attack from both these men and I did what I did only in order to defend myself".

Stokes, who starred on Saturday as England beat India in the first Test at Edgbaston, is missing the second Test at Lord's due to the trial, which is expected to last five to seven days.
