Seagal's duties will also include the preservation of Russia's memorable places in the United States and promotion of studies and popularization of the legacy of Russian-U.S. common history.

A statement issued by Russia's Foreign Ministry announced: "Steven Seagal was appointed as the Russian Foreign Ministry's special representative for Russian-US humanitarian ties".

President Vladimir Putin presented a Russian passport to United States actor Steven Seagal in 2016, saying he hoped it would serve as a symbol of how fractious ties between Moscow and Washington were starting to improve.

He tweeted: "I am deeply humbled and honoured to have been appointed as a special representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry in charge of Russian and American Humanitarian ties".

Putin of Russian Federation meeting with Steven Seagal at the Kremlin in 2016.

In 2013, BuzzFeed reported that Putin suggested to President Barack Obama that Seagal serve as an honorary envoy of Russian Federation to help improve relations between the two countries.

Meet the first astronauts to fly the new SpaceX and Boeing spaceships
The astronauts were divided into smaller crews assigned to work on test flights and first missions to the worldwide space station. On Friday, NASA revealed the nine astronauts that will fly on Boeing and SpaceX's first crewed launches.

The 66-year-old actor, who appeared in more than 60 movies, told Russia Today the following.

The Foreign Ministry announced the move Saturday on its Facebook page, saying Seagal's portfolio in the unpaid position would be to "facilitate relations between Russian Federation and the United States in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges".

"I've always tried to do everything possible to help Russian-American relations to improve". Seagal's familiy is originally from Russia, but other celebrities have been granted Russian citizenship for various reasons. His movies, including such titles as "Under Siege" and "Sniper: Special Ops", are popular with Russian audiences.

Vladimir Putin is also a fan of the kind of martial arts Seagal typically practices in his famous action films.

He said he had called Putin "one of the world's great leaders"; he described the Russian president as a personal friend and expressed a desire to improve relations between the USA and Russia. Further advancing his credentials in the Slavic world is his Serbian citizenship, which he received in early 2016, prior to the Russian one, after he offered to set up an Aikido dojo in Belgrade. More recently, as Bloomberg reported, Serbia refused to join Europe's sanctions on Moscow earlier this year.
