Your next laptop might have a 4TB SSD, thanks to Samsung

  • Samsung Starts Mass Producing 4-Bit Consumer SSDs

In 2010, it introduced its 2-bit multi-level cell with 512GB, while in 2012 it released the 3-bit triple-level cell which had 500GB storage but double the chip capacity of the previous model.

Samsung's QLC SSDs are based on the firm's 1Tb 64-layer V-NAND used in its TLC flash, which stores three bits per cell. Performance levels are claimed to be as good as with Samsung's 3-bit SSD, thanks to the use of a 3-bit SSD controller and TurboWrite technology.

Samsung then followed through on its promise this week with the announcement that it has begun mass producing the industry's first 4-bit QLC 4TB SATA SSDs specifically designed for consumers.

Executive vice president of memory sales & marketing at Samsung Electronics, Jaesoo Han explains that "Samsung's new 4-bit SATA SSD will herald a massive move to terabyte-SSDs for consumers".

New Samsung Promo Teases Galaxy Note 9 Gaming Features
This seems to back-up previous rumours that Samsung Galaxy Note 9 users will be able to connect to DeX simply with a USB-C cable. And now, let's talk about the pricing: the device will be available for £899, with the 512GB model coming in at £1099.

Pricing is yet to be revealed but the new drives are expected to be significantly cheaper than the Samsung EVO series now available.

Samsung says its new technology avoids the problem of memory cell increases from three bits to four, which would typically reduce efficiency by as much as 50 percent. Pricing and exact availability have yet to be announced. Its new 1Tb (Terabit) 4-bit V-NAND chip will also enable Samsung to efficiently produced a 128GB memory card for smartphones that will lead the way for higher capacities for high-performance memory storage. So these new 4TB QLC drives will still hit 540MB/s sequential read speeds and 520MB/s for writes.

Samsung hasn't released official pricing for the in-production drives, but its 4TB 860 Evo is now selling for over $1,000. The 2 and 4 TB drives will still be a bit spendy, but the 1TB tier should offer a solid price advantage over current 1TB solid-state drives.
