  • Ontario government to announce buck-a-beer plan

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a return to "buck-a-beer" in the province this week.

Come August 27, the minimum price floor for a bottle or can of beer will be lowered to $1.

Brewers are not required to charge less, but Ford says that there will be various incentives for those that do charge less.

"We were elected on a promise to reduce red tape and put the people first", said Premier Doug Ford, who made the announcement while visiting the Barley Days Brewery.

Government documents show the previous scheme brought in roughly $589 million in 2016-17. He says any brewers that agree to lower their prices will be given LCBO promotional considerations such as "limited-time discounts, in-store displays on end aisles and shelf extenders, or advertising in LCBO flyers and newspaper inserts". "This included a promise to bring "Buck-a-Beer" back to Ontario".

"These are normal business expenses for our stores and no costs will be incurred to either LCBO consumers or Ontario taxpayers", it said. "But instead of a climate plan or help for people living in poverty, it's a cheap beer challenge".

"Is this the premier's priority?" That minimum price had been $1.25 under the Liberal government for a decade. "We believe in our brands, take pride in our quality and firmly feel that are current prices are very fair". It's up to brewers to actually pass down the savings of $1 beer to consumers.

Steve Himel, co-founder and general manager of Henderson Brewing Co., also slammed Ford's program.

"I don't think a lot of breweries will be participating in this", Meek said, "I think it's a bad idea". Napanee Beer Company tweeted that it won't participate in this: "There are a lot of things that our province needs", they said, "but "buck a beer" isn't one of them".

The Premier did not comment on Tuesday on his larger campaign plan to allow for the wider sale of alcohol in Ontario, including expanding beer and wine sales to corner stores and big box stores.
